  • The missing network connections were located, it was mainly a problem of missing labels and me misreading a label; all the cables are accounted for. For the telephone, the solution will change: the boss recommended to ask for a new telephone connection to the outside, as they have no idea where this cable runs and how it is connected at various points. As I intend to get ADSL, it might be a problem. The new cable would just enter near the fusebox, so that solves those problems as well.

The non-function socket was probably an oversight in the fusebox, but they have to come and sort it out. It is this nice industrial looking thing: all the cables enter and are attached to numbered holders in the top, and from their they are ran to the different fuses. The box is big, but it is so nicely structured that is it almost is a work of art.

So: woohoo, the electricians come for the last time today. And this for the third day!

      • It got a bit dark first, as they did not come yesterday... but will come today.

And this morning it got pitch black: the administration told me the radiators will be switched on on Friday. This may well prevent me from removing them for cleaning and for repairing the wall behind it. The whole order of work was: remove and clean radiators, fix walls, fix floors, paint.
One option is to leave this wall and the radiators, and repair the other walls and the floor. But then I risk that the floor gets damaged later when the cast iron radiators will be taken off... :-( Maybe a plumber has a solution - I know at my brother's place they froze the water in the pipes to be able to remove a radiator without switching off the whole circuit... but I don't know...

        • A friend of mine lives in an appartment and due to maintenance the heating was turned off and the entire system was emptied. He took the opportunity (it all enters the appartment in one spot) to but, uhm, taps(?) between where the pipes enter and the first radiator and now he will always be able to detach. It's not that hard to do actually (but not really allowed where he is at).

          • Yes, I've heard similar things... It would mean taps on all radiators though (no single point of entry). The renovators told me it is no problem for them (they can manage painting, ...); the only thing I won't be able to do is clean the inside of the radiators (remove the slurry). The radiators are still very functional though, so I don't think I'm losing much capacity because of it. So I guess it will have to be like this. The radiators can always be removed later if cleaning is necessary - but I then would worry about the parquet: these cast iron radiators are heavy.

            • Frankly, I have never heard of radiators functioning suboptimally due to residue. But he, I do not discuss radiators that often.

              • Well, a colleague of mine had this issue, but mine work quite ok, so I don't think it is an issue for me.

I'm still waiting for them to come to put the main cable... And that would be the last thing.

My painters are already scheduled to start Monday, so finally the place will be "constructed" rather than "destructed". They can start in the rooms; the main cable is a very short section in the corridor.

                • You are at the End of the Proverbial Tunnel

Finally it will be done...very soon by the sounds of it!

                  • Well, they are counting 2 days to fix the walls, 2 days for replastering them, not sure how much days they count for painting and other minor repairs. The corridor has this pattern in the wall which has to be removed and which may prove to be more work than they anticipate, and one wardrobe needs to be removed as it is screwed in the parket floor (it sits on top a panel floor on top of the parket, which prevents good renovation of the floor). So let's say 2-4 weeks (including surprises)? Then about 1 week for the floors...

                    • Progress is going very well.... 2 rooms have gotten the first layer. Planning is still to finish this week!
This does not include the corridor, as the main cable still has not been replaced (electrical company first has to change the meter).

And the phone company also came to install me the new phoneline. And unsurprisingly, they messed up: I have a working phoneline, but its phonenumber is not the one on my contract. I don't know if I'm sharing the number with somebody else, or how it happened, but they will have to return...

                        • You can freeze the radiators if water is in circulation, good repair people have liquid CO2 for that.

Probably... but it is only allowed for certified people to work on electricity.

Yes, but for some reason they don't seem too eager to do that. Maybe it has to do with the old plumbing, or with the fact that I'm on the 4th floor of a 21 story building... Still, it should not be a problem to finish it as it is.
