    Just a mains rocker switch, which I have just replaced.
    Its a halogen lamp so I am thinking the transformer is cause a spike, but why booting windows makes it trigger is perplexing.

    @ Debbie
    The idea if trying a different cables might get somewhere.

    You could see if there is a bios update for your motherboard, I have seen updates on some baords that fix corruption issues like this so you can use the VGA to DVI adapter. It might be worth checking if there are any official updates for your vdeo card as well.

      This is happening with just the particular monitor I have mentioned and with all capturing software.

      @Marshmallowman
      The VGA cable is prmanently soldered not a pluged. I will try the monitor on a different motherboard and see if I get the same result.

            It does surprise me that with all our technology, we still can encounter problems that are too silly for words. And trying to figure it out will be damn near impossible. So maybe Technoid is on to something...

            My father has this weird problem with his Volvo (since it was new): if you start it with a cold engine, and only move it a few metres, the next time it will refuse the start (almost like it is flooded). The solution is to give a bit of gas before turning it off. The garage has no idea why this occurs, but as the solution is so simple, they suggested leaving it: finding the cause would be expensive.

                  It is a Volvo 850 from around 1995-1996, 5 cylinder, 2.0 litre, 20 valves (187 horsepower IIRC), automatic gearbox.

                    could be as simple as a vacuum leak or a throttle position sensor. The 850s were notorious for vacuum tubing elbows going soft and collapsing or rotting out. i know, i had one. There are about 5 around the engine - volvo sells a kit for just the job. THere is a company that specializes in volvos - IPD - in the US, Washington/Oregon area. You can find them online and email them about the issue. They are a bunch of enthusiasts in the volvo parts business and generally pretty knowledgeable.

                      Well, my dad has lived with the issue since having the car (16-17 years now), and the Volvo dealer had no clue... As it does not seem to give any other issues or faster wear or so, it is no big deal... It did it from the very start...

                        Yes it has been a grounding issue. Problem solved. Thanks
