That part about thinking about upgrading before finishing assembly was very painful. I recently purchased a PIII 600 Coppermine, and I had visions of PIII 750's dancing in my head before the FedEx carrier arrived at my door.

The "spare parts" computer also rang a bell. The problem I have with machines built from spare parts is I'm always missing a couple, whether it be RAM, or a case, or a hard drive. I always end up spending an extra $400-$500 to build systems I intended to build entirely out of spare parts.

What is all this madness!?! I haven't o/c'd anything and this STILL applies to me!!! My dad's an electrical contractor and I swear, I haven't seen screws or covers or ... on ANYTHING (including TV's, microwaves, washing machines...)! Hmmmm, four "extra" computer systems in the garage, let me see, 6 (how do you change font sizes?) burned out monitors.... The house lights WOULD dim if we hadn't put a generator outside.... Enough for now ...

Hmmm . . . well you might add these:

              29) if the a.c. in your house must pass through your computer case before being allowed to cool the room . . .

              30) if your case pushes out more cfm (cubic feet per minute) than your ceiling fan does.

              31) if you have more fans in your case than than all the other computers in your neighborhood combined.

              32) if you know the operating temperature of your case and chip - plus their relationship to the ambient room temperature.

              33) If the leads on your outdoor thermometor end inside your computer case.

              34) If you have to warn people using your computer to turn on the A.C. first - for the computer's sake.

              35) If you keep a room fan handy - just in case there is a cooling problem.

                      40. You build a home network to justify keeping the old left over computers around.

Corollary to 40. You have more wire surrounding your computer(s) than around your stereo.

                          Guilty as charged!

I spent 6 hours today trying to get my rig (PIII-450) to do 600!! (again!). Tried fiddling with almost every bios setting, voltage tweak, fresh goo on my HSF (lowered CPU temp by 10C!!) and so on and so forth.

Managed to get it stable at 6000@2.2V, L2 cache disabled (sad!!), but only using an old vga ISA adaptor, not my beloved G200. It could not handle 87Mhz (2/3 FSB).

Maybe I'll try installing some copper spacers on the L2 cache chips. Any good advice on this procedure???

                          Well, it's the neverending story....

                          Regards,

                          Jake

BTW: I won't eat next month as I just shelled out about $700 (hardware is friggin expensive in Denmark!!) on a lovely Adaptec AHA-2940U2W PCI controller and a 9.1 GB Seagate Cheetah 10K HDD! Now that's a BAD mutha!!!

                            Jake,

Shoulda told me you were looking...

Had an old Cheetah 9GB and 2940U2W just sitting around...

Sold the HD to the office for $400 and gave the controller to them as I didn't have to pay for either of them in the first place....

Replaced them with a pair of Quantum Atlas 10K 18.2GB driven by an Adaptec 29160 (not 29160n)... Now that's a sweet setup...
