  • Abit BE6-II and Celeron II 600

    Question:

Is it at all possible to get the Cel II 600 to work with a BE6-II?

My friend purchased the motherboard 3 months ago, but at that time decided to wait until better CPU's were available before upgrading his Pentium II 300. Now, he has just picked up a Cel II 600, but after installation into his BE6-II, the computer won't start properly.

I've checked serveral review sites showing people running the Cel II 566 chip on a wide variety of BX motherboards and my friend was hoping the 600MHz chip would work on his computer. Should we pursue the matter further and try to get the CPU working? Or, is it a hopeless attempt and we should try to get the 566.

Any help would be much appreciated. ThanX.

    Ben

heck yes ... it should be working !

Can you get into the BIOS ?

If so, raise the VCore to 1.7 as a start and try again ...

Could you decribe the 'improper startup' a bit more detailed ?

    Cheers,
    Maggi

      Hey Maggi,

My friend says that the computer will POST (althought he didn't report what speed it displayed) but locks up during the Windows boot process. We thought it was just a limitation of the BX chipset, and the multiplier of 9 for the Cell II 600 was not possible, although 8.5 is.

Another thing is, that ABIT has a new BIOS release for the BE6-II, but says it is only for the newer revision of the board, which we do not have.

          Seven,

Is it really possible to raise the voltage to 2.0 (or above) on the BE6-2 or BF6?

I don't own a Celeron 600 myself, but on a friends BX6-2 we could not get the voltage above 1.7v when using a 0.18m chip like the Celeron 600.

          Regards,

          Jake

Wow Seven, 1002MHz on your Cel II 600, impressive. Well, my friend has the Abit BE6-II revision 1.0, and the BIOS update that allows for the Cel II 600 and above is only for the revision 2 motherboards that have the new HPT370 ATA-100 controller onboard.

2.0 volts? Well, even at 1.8 volts we could not get the system stable at even 600; Windows 98 would bluescreen from time to time. ThanX for all the info, I'll try and get back to work on it again. 8-)

            Regards,

              yikes ! ... 2.0 VCore, Seven ???

You're an OCing, nut, you know ...

Anyway, glad to see you got it stable up there and I surely hope that ObiBen's friend get's it at least up to 850MHz ...

Say ObiBen, could you post the exact label of that Celeron along with the place where it was manufactured ?
This would help to track down whether he had one of the 'not-so-OCing-friendly' batches ...

ThanX for the help guys. Hey Maggi, when I get the chance I'll pop the BE6-II out of MY case cuz the the label is on the underside of the ISA slot. All I know if that it is version 1.0. BTW, in case you are wondering, I have the BE6-II. The store that he purchased the Cel II 600 wanted to charge a 20% restocking fee, so instead of eating that cost he decided to just keep the CPU and try to get it working again. Anyway, being the nice person I am 8-), I offered to try the 600 on both my AOpen motherboards.

The first attempt on the AOpen AX6BC worked, somewhat. The machine detected the CPU as a 599E. After successfully booting into W98, I decided to try overclocking the CPU, but to no avail. The computer refused to POST.

My next attempt was on the AOpen AX6BC Pro II Millenium Edition. The machine detected the CPU as a Celeron 600 - finally, something better. After succefully booting into W98, I decided to try overclocking the CPU and see if I had better chances of getting somewhere. At first I tried a bus speed of 84, thus putting the CPU to a clock speed of 747. That worked fine! Next, I tried a 100, the I am happy to say the machine worked fine at 900. I'll try for 1000 later.

Well, after seeing the success of getting the Cel II 600 to work at 900 on my computer (after playing an hour of Q3), I decided to trade my AX6BC Pro II for my friends BE6-II (plus he'll give me some money for the price difference in the two boards).

I spent a couple of hours getting my own Cu PIII 500E at 700 using a 140MHz bus speed so everything seems okay. After my friend installed my former AX6BC Pro II into his own machine, his W98 is still crashing, even when he clocked the machine back down to 600. Oh well, he's gonna reinstall the OS.

                Anyway, thanX for help guys.

                Regards,

                Ben

PS. For any of those out there for use a BE6-II, what has been the highest attainable bus speed you have been able to reach with this motherboard. Also, what setting in the BIOS (I have version RV) did you use to atain that speed and what voltage is your CPU set at. I know settings will probably be slightly different for each person, but I'm trying to see what other's have their PC's set at. Also, I have the AGP 2X version of the G400MAX, NOT the newer AGP4X.

Good to read you got it working now ...

For stability reason you shoud set the I/O Recovery Time for 8bit & 16bit to 2 BUSCLK
