Speaking as a cable modemer I agree totally. These things are totally addictive.

Now all your need is a good router/firewall so hackers can't hack your computer, a major problem with broadband services. Look at the Linksys. The software firewalls take up too many resources.

ALBPM.... tired of waiting, then get this:

In Denmark the Phonecompany that own all the cable has suddenly gotten some "problems" (yeah right) so that the company´s like World Online can´t rent the copper from them anymore, so now you have to wait about three months just to know wheter or not you can get connected via ADSL, and another couple of months for the installation.
If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

welcome to the land of the people with the rediculous low ping (or even ludicrous low ping = ping 0 - 20 in q3a), and high speed downloads

Hey - this is great. I needed to free up my only telephone line and are able to get rid of my previous ISP. No cost overall.

I'm unable to get my SETI clients to autoconnect anymore. I have the Remote Auto Connection Manager (or whatever) set to automatic and started. Anyone have a clue?

Also, I am using Norton as the software firewall. I have heard it is a resource hog, but I don't find that to be the case. Anyone have good luck with it other than me? I intend to connect all my computers to my DSL modem through a switch. Anyone see a problem (other than the possibility of multiple IP addresses)? Any hints on this connection?

                Brian,
I'd suggest you dump Norton's firewall and get BlackICE Defender (www.networkice.com), because if you don't, anyone can hack through that one! Just ask Zwish

and welcome to the world of high speed access!

Greebe - Is this the E-mail issue? or is this another weak point. I am aware of the E-mail problem and is not an issue for me. What do you think of the use of a switch with the DSL modem? Do I need additional HW?

The Linksys router/switch/firewall takes care of it all. If you have a switched network already you can uplink it to the cheaper single port version for ~$100 USD.

Its hardware firewall is reported as impervious by all the test sites I've tried it with. NOTHING gets through and no programs to run on the computer.

Here's a site which reviews both the Linksys router and the D-link router:

Brian, there is a flaw in the proggy, in which a port is left open. Norton claims to have fixed it, but alas it still exists. this little gap is all that's neccessary to get in.

All you people with ADSL should consider yourselves lucky. Here in the UK we have to tolerate BT. They have delayed their rollout of ADSL by another 3-4 months. From what I gather they claim that this has been brought on by not had enough trialists available!!
BTW in the UK it is supposed to cost approx £40 for 512mbits/sec. What does ADSL cost in the rest of the world.
