I tried DX8 beta, never noticed anything special about it, restored a ghost backup of my system partition I had made before even trying it. I agree that DX installs would be uninstallable, whether it's a beta or an official copy.
You know, if there was competition in the OS market maybe things like this would get seen to. Of course, I am not sure there has ever been competition in the OS market. Each one seems to create it's own market or dies, for the simple fact that they are so incompatible, to compete you have to have access to the same customers for it to be called that. Perhaps OS/2 could have been competing with windows at some point, but that's about it.

Hehe, here is another one that doesn't use winzip. Don't have a copy, never owned one. Why use a seperate program to zip? Instead I use Windows Commander.

Many SW companies these days ship alpha level products to their beta sites and ship beta level as final products. The SW industry has gotten to be such a competitive business that the companies would rather get the product out there, collect the revenues, and fix it in the next release. Most corporate users won't install beta code on a production machine and will be prepared to rebuild the machine after testing. Only after thoroughly testing the product will the product be used in a test pilot and after its successful trial, only then be slowly deployed throughout the enterprise. Even hobbyists have to realize the risk they take with untested products (beta or final) and need to be prepared with contingency plans in case they need to reinstate their previous machine state. Investigating the successful ability to uninstall the product is just one of the preparations one should take as part of these contingency plans ... before installing the product.<TABLE BGCOLOR=Red><TR><TD><Font-weight="+1"><font COLOR=Black>The world just changed, Sep. 11, 2001</font></Font-weight></TR></TD></TABLE>

The installer issue is one of the major headaches plagueing (sp?) Micro$haft right at the moment. You will notice that every Microsoft product uses a slightly different version of the installer and uninstaller, and that they can't seem to settle on just one.
There are (as others have posted already) workarounds to the problem.
Even worse is Office 2000 SP1. I have only seen ONE machine where SP1 installed correctly. On most of the others, it asks for the Office 2000 CD, and once it's done with that asks for an Office SP1 CD (which is stupid because you're installing it from the net!) and refuses to look anywhere other than the CD drive for it. *sigh*

DosFreak:
That IS required (for example, Premium and Professional are NOT interchangeable as far as SP1 is concerned) but often it doesn't matter - it just gets confused anyway.

If You want remove DX7 from Win9x just delete all files witch You find in system and have something to do with DX (include string "dx" for example (for some files You must restart comp 8-) ) ). and then try to install dx3 and then dx7. I know it because when I try play Baldurs Gate on network without patch under dx7 then I have bad result 8-))) and I am too lazy to reinstal system. Hmm, then I try something else and it's works. So try it with dx8. I think the core of dx is the same like 7.ASUS A7V ||| Duron 800@1070 ||| TITAN Majesty -> cooling unit ||| 256Mb PC133 ||| G400 DH MAX ||| SB Live! 1024 ||| IBM 25Gb ||| HP Writer 7100 ||| DVD AOpen 1040 (flash Pionner) ||| Win2k

Lindberg:
Personally I use a registered copy of WinZip 8.
As far as I'm concerned, if I use software then I should have to pay for it.
That is why 100% of my software is registered.
I use MS Office 2000, so I went out and bought a copy of MS Office 2000 Premium.
I didn't actually have to purchase my copy of WinZip 8 or my copy of WinDVD.
I simply alerted both manufacturers to a couple of sites that were illegally offering these software titles for download.
As way of thanks each company sent me a full copy of the software.
Even my OS's is fully legal, OEM Win 3.11 came with my very first PC.
You can legally transfer it over to another PC so long as the old copy os deleted, and then retail upgrade to Win95, Win98 & Win2000.
I'm sorry if I'm in a minority, but I will always pay for what I use.

That pic looks like an updated version of that old 60's hot-rod icon, Rat Fink.
Just checked the URL ... sure nuff. Boy, that brings back old memories. Is this a revival, or has this old rodent been still hanging around all these years?<TABLE BGCOLOR=Red><TR><TD><Font-weight="+1"><font COLOR=Black>The world just changed, Sep. 11, 2001</font></Font-weight></TR></TD></TABLE>
