Yeh I was looking there last night but most of the answers are refering to supervoice software that comes with the modem (Supervoice).
Played round with Supervoice comm server and while this has a distant ring option however enabling this kills all fax reception.

Well 3com came up trumps not. I asked them to check the initlisation string and they said we haven't tested the software in question ask symantec. Mmm if it is the string I can edit it well never mind. I'm still waiting for symantec to answer my other problem.

So I take it that your modem came with SuperVoice and not WinFax Pro. My 5605 (looks identical to yours) came with WinFax Pro 8. Not sure what you mean by "Mmm if it is the string I can edit it well never mind." Please explain. Also, "I'm still waiting for symantec to answer my other problem" ... what problem? Please try to be a little more clear and exacting. You did confirm that WinFax recognized your modem in the setup wizard and installed the init string, right?! Again, I would recommend that you copy the init string from SuperVoice and install it in WinFax Pro. Also, publish here what SuperVoice is using for the init string. I'll try to look at the strings.

Sorry. I asked 3com to check the inilisation string and they just said we haven't tested the software (Winfax pro).
I can always edit the string and I did what you suggested about the supervoice string and winfax pro just hung when resetting the modem. The string supervoice uses is AT&f1&c1s7=45+mca=0.
Yes winfax reconized my modem and setup did the rest. I've had to uninstall the program
for now as the darn thing kept insisting on running on startup (And hence voicemail being effectively shut off) although I had disabled this option.
The other problem I was refering to was with another symantec product I shouldn't have mentioned it. However on there discussion forum I responded to a users problem saying I had the same problem and still waiting for a response and tech support emailed me telling me off for doing it!!
Hence I dont expect a helpful response from them.

I've been there already. I just wanted additional info so I could try to help... Since you don't want it, nevermind.

Is the M# listed above (015625-00) the one actually on the modem or is that from 3Com web site?

As expected I didn't get a helpful response from symantec.
They suggested switching off the automated answer service.
Fine I already told them I had done that but as soon as I download anything the modem is reset back to answering any call with an attempted fax handshake.
I asked them to check the string which I posted. They didn't look at it or chose not to comment.
There final solution is to get BT to enable distinct ring on my phone line. Fine but I got a distinct feeling it ain't going to work.

I think I asked 3com the wrong question. If I asked them how do I make my modem answer every call will an attempted handshake and then asked for the string it might have made interesting reading. I might just do this.

Well Symantec have emailed me back again.

The initialization string is correct. This is working as designed. WinFax does not distinguish between voice and fax. As long as WinFax is in Automatic Receive and connected to the phone line, ANY call that
comes in will be treated as if it were a fax call. Voice calls will appear as failed fax events.

They still haven't confirmed whether it's the string or not. Still haven't answered the question why I have to reset the modem each time I download a fax, otherwise effectively the voicemail is disabled.

I think I'll sell the software on unfortunatley I haven't got the orginal box or I would have took it back to the shop under the guise that it's unfit for the purpose that it's sold for.
