Smp support questions....

So is it working with dual CPU's using an FCPGA->Slot1 adapter?

It was a nightmare when I was putting together my primary system. Several types of Slotkets (we didn't try ASUS though, but Abit's adapter also claimed smp support), different revisions of 667MHz FCPGA p3's and neither would boot up in dual. A single cpu using an adapter worked.

The only solution was when the store finally managed to dig up two slot1 cpu's.

By the way, I love this motherboard, very stable, never had the slightest problem with it other than this.

Well...here's an update...

The adapters don't work yet since even when i try to boot up with a single processor installed,the board doesn't recognize the cpu and when i reinstall the old cpu's,the board starts up fine.

So i'm off to get a different brand that don't have any VRM's on board,and see how it goes from there.

Still keeping the faith.....

Yes Gurm,i am.

But what you have to realise is that while the vp6 is very nice and all,this board built for use in servers/workstations that run 24/7 for weeks straight between shutdowns and has the features to prove it,like dedicated 64bit/66 mhz(528mb/sec)pci slots suitable for gigabit ethernet or running scsi raid cards,which require 64 bit pci.

Something that the vp6 only wish it had,and if it did,it woudn't cost 150$.

Except the supermicro one trades one pci slot for an agp4x slot(agp pro 110w)

Actually that's enough juice to power a voodoo5/6000 directly(had it been released),without the need for an external power supply.

There's actually an extra power supply connector on the board,desingned specificaly for extra heavy loads.

UBB, the browser or my own stupidity managed to cut the only important part of my hw details yesterday, the motherboard. Mine is a SuperMicro P3DM3, with on-board SCSI and LAN, very convenient.

And we definitely couldn't get it to work in dual using any kind of adapter, while real slot1 cpu's work in dual just fine.

It's only the non-availability of slot1 versions which is extremely painful.

I would love to hear you made it work because I'm pretty much in the same boat wanting to upgrade, with no easy way of getting faster slot1 cpu's.

Quad CPU motherboards are very entertaining. Now, if I only had a compelling reason to own one.

Does the Supermicro dual CPU board support a 133 MHz memory bus? It says FSB: 133/100, which is a little vague. That could be a CPU/Memory bus ratio or it could mean 133 or 100.

I thought that was a limitation of the i840 chipset. Memory only runs @ 100 MHz.

FDS, if you're responding to my question to superfly, the motherboards he and I were been drooling over aren't based on the i840 chipset. They use ServerWorks ServerSet chipsets.

Xortam, I really have no need for a multiple computer (or even a multiple CPU) solution. I'm just a motherboard junkie.

Did Intel buy ServerWorks? I ran across a ServerSet motherboard on their site last night.

Yes it does,the bus speed between the cpu/s and chipset runs at 133mhz if you're using 133mhz fsb cpu's,the memory will always run at 100 mhz regardless,but it does have 2 memory channels and it interleaves it's memory banks,so you have to install 2 memory modules at a time(like the 850 with rambus).

Back to the topic....

I tried another slot adapter and the same thing happends,even with only one cpu installed,the system won't start at all.

So i call again supermicro,and this time i had a long and detailed talk about why the adapters won't work and it seems that even they coudn't get any 840 board to recognize cpu's with their own adapter and aparently they put several months of engeneering time to try and make it work,but without any success.

Aparently the 840 boards are so sensitive,that any minor timing,or voltage pull up issues between the cpu's,will mess things up.

So i have no choice but to try and find slot 1 versions that will work on the board.

They only state that their adapter will work on the 840 when only using a single cpu on the board.

Here's the final update...

i returned the cpu's,to which the store didn't even charge me a restocking fee since i'm one of their best customers(got the bills to prove it too... ).

Anyways,while i was there,i asked again to see if they had any other slot 1 p3's available,so they check again their distributors(they have 3),by some incredible luck one of them received 150 slot 1 p3 933/133's yesterday(retail version),so i imediately placed an order for a pair.

It seems that they have received their final shipement of them,since intel is discontinuing it's production within the next two months,and even now,their current production is extremly limited,so if anyone here is considering the upgrade,do it now before it's all gone.

So in the end,i'll settle for cpu's that are at most 5% slower than intended and the only thing i can't return are the adapters and the extra heatsinks/fans.
