Jorden, You cannot do 92kbps upload speed with any V.90 modem. (think about it)

I never said you do actually have a hardware modem and from all the reading I've done it's software only.

      More init strings

Jorden you could try some more init strings, i found some for Trust modems at Mr. Modem. Or a whole lot of links at 56k

PCPitstops 50K download test is a bit small to get a true representation of download speeds.

It can't be a V92 either, I dont think any ISPs support that protocol yet, atleast not in Europe.

Let's just say I got a good line at that moment, or an utterly weird modem

My modem can't do V.92, although my ISP can. I can't flash my modem to V.92 either. The only tweak I did was setting the init string to ATZ, compression on and hardware control on. My connection speed is set at 115,200bps with the ATZ command. My true line speed is still a mystery (but at least not a misery anymore ). I'll follow your links, bacon, thanks

        I'll be back

Just dump the diagnostics of your modem to find out the specifics of your last connection. Use HyperTerminal or another terminal emulator to enter the appropriate AT commands.

Jorden, if you were to smack Holly on the butt, would she not jerk in responce?! (all hypothetical of course)

Same goes for this benchmark... do multiple tests and avg only the normal ones (leave off the peak and the lowest scores).

Well Mike, I spanked the modem 3 times on each option given. At different times and at different ISPs.
Here's my results, but I don't think they are too accurate

              Megapath:

              download «25 kbps
              upload «87 kbps

              download «27 kbps
              upload «92 kbps

              download «26 kbps
              upload «81 kbps

              Linkline:

              download «32 kbps
              upload «199 kbps

              download «32 kbps
              upload «199 kbps

              download «32 kbps
              upload «127 kbps

              See?

Looks like I got dual channel ISDN on one channel

Why haven't you tried testing your upload speed when uploading a file (highly compressed ie RAR or Zip file) to your ISP via ftp?

Yeah ... with compression on and you sending a 'normal' file ( not compressed ), the file is compressed while sending hence the unreal upload speed. Try sending a compressed file to test the 'real' upload speed as Greebe said.

Well, according to the dslreports speed test page: "This test is a transfer of nearly uncompressable data"

So, I don't think that's causing his high upload speeds.

                      Better results

I just uploaded a 218Kb file to my webspace, using WS-FTP Pro.

Transmitted 222484 bytes in 111.4 secs, (19.58 Kbps), transfer succeeded

That would be more like it, although I have to re-test, since I had a slight halt in the upload, when Holly sent something to a site.

                      So test 2:
Transmitted 222484 bytes in 73.8 secs, (29.57 Kbps), transfer succeeded

                      And test 3:
Transmitted 222484 bytes in 73.9 secs, (29.51 Kbps), transfer succeeded

                      Downloading the same file:
Received 222484 bytes in 43.5 secs, (50.08 Kbps), transfer succeeded
(edit: hold on, this can't be... it should be slower... redownloading:
Received 222484 bytes in 46.3 secs, (47.06 Kbps), transfer succeeded... okay, so it's not much slower )

                      Is that any better then?

                      Jord.

                          verdict?

So the verdict is? Do I have a hardware or software modem, or can't we say from these results?

edit : Jord beat me to it.

What does Device Manager say? Do a query modem thingie ... Control Panel>Modems>Properties>Diagnostics>Query Modem ... this is in Win2k, but i think its the same in Win9x ... post the 'findings'.

Winmodem's are called such cause they are software only.

Meaning mine isn't as I can't check it, since it's in use

Oh well, at any thunderstorm approaching I will now shut down my PC and only unhook the phone cable. And we have enough T-storms around here.
Tonight's ones already let car-alarms go off, so I wonder what will they do tomorrow

                                Jord.

                                Thanks everyone who helped me!
