Being ignorant in these matters I do wonder how audio(phile) quality is important when watching movies. Is that groaning and screaming really gonna be that much more entertaining at high-end quality? As far as home ciname and gaming is concerned I don;t see a sound-quality related reason not to go wireless.

IMO, but what do I know, audiophiles should still go 2.0 (or possible 2.1) for music unless they are very rich. Simply because you can buy better equipment for the same expenditure if you buy only 2 instead of 5, 6, 7 or whatever number of speakers (and amps).

The main difference is that a high-end system manages to fill the room better at any volume setting. Many low-end systems don't fill the room when the volume is not set loud, and many just sound too busy/crowded/dense when turned up louder. Some lower end systems incorporate an equalizer and start to fiddle with this when the volume changes, but it just doesn't sound the same.

If possible, I would avoid it (better to spend the money on a better wired system). But of course not everyone has hidden cables in the walls for speakers, and cabling can become an issue. And it that aspect: better a wireless system than no system.

Yes, the ideal situation is to have 2 systems: a music system (2 speakers) and a TV system (preferably in a sperate room) that uses more speakers. Both my brother (Sphinx amp + Sphinx preamp + Floating system speakers for music, Denon AV receiver + 5.1 Monitor Audio speakers for cinema) as his father-in-law (high end Sony amp + B&W Nautilus for music, high end Sony home cinema system for movies) have this luxury...
          (drooooool..... )

However, if you want to have an alround system, one has the most joy from a home cinema system with nice speakers. I currently have an Onkyo Integra system + 2 Quadral speakers (purchased for music use); my TV has rear speakers so I do get part of the movie experience. At times, I would love to have a home cinema system, but now is not the time for me to purchase it (have no room now + chances of moving somewhere else next year)

I'm pretty set on getting that Logitech kit.

I don't watch pr0n on that TV so I don't care if anyone listens in on my rear channel audio.

If you want to make a post for me. Ask people if there's something better/cheaper than that Logitech kit. Remember, optical audio input (TOSLINK) is a key requirement.

Seriously, you should audition the speakers if at all possible.
You may not be an audiophile, I can guarrantee you'll hear the difference between a $400 five speaker system and a good PAIR of $400 speakers.

Sure, but a 2.x setup won't get him to hear the alines approach from behind (I'm pretty sure). Unless they can do some pretty tricks like Roger Walters did with erhm, whasit, Dogs?

yeah, properly recorded stereo sound can usually simulate sounds coming from any direction PROVIDED you are sitting in the right spot (hey, we do it with our TWO ears!)

My dad's stereo, which I do most of my serious listening on, has an Audio Research D70 (tubed of course) stereo amplifer and Quad ESL63s. You cannot beat a two speaker setup up (unless it is 2.1 or even 2.2) for music.

                    - surround sound was really created for theatres where not every person is in an ideal place in the theatre to hear everything, which in the case of many HOME theatres remains true. Depending on your room and seating arrangement though, you can still maintain a very close to "surround" feel with stereo speakers, and then in that case you get to actually get GOOD speakers

well, I was trying to suggest that buying 2 pairs of proper speakers and a proper 5.1 amp
may enhance the total listening experience.
It would probably bring the total cost above what Smo was willing to pay, but actually listening to the difference has persuded folks to cough up the extra money.

I want this as a companion to my xbox 360 (still on backorder). I need 5.1 speakers. And they don't have to be that good, just good enough.

Klipsch!! Get from someone who has much more experience in developing audio products - as much as I like Logitech, they just aren't that big of a brand in audio.
