I have the Toshiba M1202 3rd generation DVD player and it works great.

The Pioneer is also a great DVD player, I guess it all comes down to how much you want to pay for one.

I'm using the pioneer 6x scsi and am very pleased. Power dvd runs fine. I have a problem with glicthing on some movies, but I only have a K6-2/350.
Waiting for the K6-3/500 to come down some in price.

        Jihad,

The Pioneer 10X drive should be out by Holiday 1999. I'm waiting for it.

Is by any chance your handle related to a Mentallo & The Fixer offshoot? If not, nevermind..

So is the S/PDIF on DVD drives capable of passing the audio from DVD movies out to the the sound card, or is this only good for passing CD Audio out?

          Thanks.

I guess all this is subject to opinion. I noticed what one person feels is good looking and smooth is sometimes not the same for another. Anyway, I wasn't satified with the 1202 Toshiba, and the Pioneer (Although the best drive) lacks a digital out. I do HIGHLY recommend Panasonic's 5X for the almost Pioneer speed, the digital output and the DVD-R compatibility. Max PC has a pretty good review of all these drives...

pnkflyd51, that's where I'm confused too. I would guess that it's only for CD-Audio, as I think DVD audio is encoded differently, and comes directly through the data stream. I'm not sure though. Could someone confirm this?

The dvd audio is encoded into the data stream. It is compresssed to allow for multiple languadges.

To get true AC-3 audio you will need a receiver that can decode this format. Plus a full set of surround speakers...
