  • Why is G-200 affected by CPU resisters

    I accidentally chipped off a little piece off the end of one of the (resisters?), about 1mm, under the lid of my K6-2 450. It still works, but it messes up my video card (Matrox Marvel G-200 AGP), and I get on error on Java enabled web pages. 2d works fine on my video card but 3d don’t, also clockspeeds are different. Could it be the CPU thats adding noise, and/or 2x incompatibilities, not the Mobo's. Here is what I experienced using final reality, as I couldn't start any games, etc.

    1) AGP 2x instead of 1x

    2) Wierd clockspeed and G-200CLK and Powerstrip cause the speed to go up every time its used even though the settings are the same.

    3) When the logo first comes up (AGP/MMX detected) it has colors where it blends in to the desktop.

    4) AGP test, no fingers (just flashes) and background (blocks) is distorted.

    5) Radial Blur - No Go

    6) Chaos zoomer - OK but frames dropped 10

    7) Bus transfer - 2D 162 -> 146, 3D 63 -> 35

    8) 25 Pixel - Artifacts 137 -> 113

    9) Fill Rate - OK

    10) Robots - Error 'KF: Face in object "ground" didn't receive full mapping in [materials] in [character] in [KF.TXT]!'

    11) City - No Go

    Much Thanks in advance!!!!!

    You did what? Chipped off a register? Do you mean a pin or what?

    Cheers,

    Steve

      That was 'Resister' meaning it reduces voltage in an electrical circuit. If you remove the metal on top.
      It has the same little tan and brown ‘thingies’ (3.5 x 1.25 mm) as are on PCB’s (if you have seen the PCB of a hard drive you have seen a bunch of them), soldered onto gold pads that go all the way around the CPU which is in the center and measures about 7 x 12 x 1 mm. There are 16 spots where they could be placed. The 450 MHz chip has 12 on it & the 300 MHz chip only has two. The way this came about is that I was testing a newer revision of my watercooler and it slipped from my fingers and… well. All is not lost though, as I have gained valuable knowledge about cooling AMD CPU’s. So back to the point I’m trying to make here. Since the two CPU have different numbers of ‘thingies’ and the one that has a broken ‘thingy’ basically affects only the video card. Now would adding or subtracting one of these or changing the size change how well they work with the G-200?

      P.S. Does anybody know were I can buy a brown thingy to replace the one I broke.

        We have to know the whatnot capacity and the thingamajig value to specify the exact thingy to recommend.

          In a nut shell, "yes." The Resistor (or capacitor - it's hard to tell when they are so small) out of the loop means more noise going into/out of the CPU. Maybe "Silent Serpent" might help?

          Oh, also. Don't bother trying to find one of those "thingies." They were soldered on using a special process (called "wave soldering," I believe).

            mikehdft,

            if you "chip off" a peace of your brain, some bodily functions may not be the same.

            Basically, this applies also to CPU:s.

              Rubank not always true theres a lot of Poeple
              out there who could take whole chunks away and it wouldn't alter there bodily functions.

              Seriuosly if the problems occured directly after the accident mikehdft it looks like your looking at a buggered CPU.

              Would my spelling improve if I took a chunk of brain off trying it oh
