I want to share with you my experience with case ventilation.


After I built my dual celeron system (300A clocked to 450) I've got some serious heat problems. The thermal pads on the heatsinks melted and started to drip away...

I took it to a friend of mine who works with cooling R&D. He told me that it was no wonder that my computer gets hot when the case is THAT tight.

His recommendations were:

1. The fan in the power supply should pull out hot air from the CPU-s instead of blowing pre-heated air on them.

2. Removing all "protection" from the fans because of the air resistance. I.e. making one big hole instead of alot of small ones. (Cutting away the metal in front of the fan)

3. Making holes in the case right above the CPUs and mount some fans blowing fresh air directly onto the CPU heatsinks. (Almost the same way they did on the "Nerd" box.)

4. Since my case almost had no exhaust holes at all in the front (One slit under the plastic front), drill alot of holes using a industrial perforated metal plate as a template. (Working in a metal workshop is a plus

5. Switch from thermal pads to thermal grease on the CPU-s.

After I modified the case, the motherboard temperature dropped from 45C to 29C.

I'll see if I can borrow a friend's camera to get some pictures to show you.

Did I see a reply asking what is next in the realm of cooling? How about intalling a 6hp shop-vac to the rear of your PC? That would sure draw some air through your case. What? You say noise is a problem? You can put your shop-vac anywhere.. in the basement even and just run some hose/pipe to your computer. I mean, who doesn't have a shop-vac sitting around.

Yeah... just hook up your central vaccuum hose.

Or maybe you should sit your case on the A/C vent, after cutting out the bottom.

Or get long cables for all your peripherals, and just leave the case in the chest freezer in the basement.

Positive, negative pressure - it's all the same thing, really. What's important is air flow. If you fans blowing in, but no place for it to exit, you're not doing your box any favors. Same thing with fans sucking out the hot air.

The best thing is sucking AND blowing. (Hey, I'm still talking about FANS here!)

Ah, you let me down when you said you're still talking about boring old fans...

I STILL say that running liquid nitrogen through your central heating system instead of hot water. You'll see your ambient temperature drop! Just don't touch the radiators...
