  • Abit LX6 and G400Max

I know I'm running an old MB with a P2-300 on it, but I still couldn't resist pre-ordering the G400MAX. I'll upgrade in the near future, but I want to know if anyone has tried running the MAX on an old LX6 MB. I recall somewhere on VoodooExtreme that the old LX chipsets have problems using the newer video cards like TNT2 or V3. Anyone know about this? Or am I needing to upgrade sooner than I thought?

I've read that older motherboards can't supply sufficient power to the AGP slot for newer cards. This is probably even more of a factor on OEM type mobos. I've even seen pics of burned pins and circuit traces. Can't remember where though. Hate to be a bummer. Hope this helps.

Could this be true? As a happy Abit LX6 owner who doesn't plan on upgrading this year, I don't want the G400 to burn up circuits..

Can anyone from Matrox or Abit please confirm this?

It's confirmed with Abit, also they confirmed that the mb has been discontinued, and it does fail with the G400, i suggest you use BH6 instead,

        Regards,

R0M, I really appreciate the quick reply! Support like this is what makes Matrox the best in the industry.

Really quite happy with my ole LX6/P2-266 and Matrox G200 at home.. only running Photoshop/IE5 and very occasional Quake3 on NT.

Maybe this holiday season I'll upgrade..

Thanks guys! I guess I'll have to make another order for that new mother board. Anybody know if there's that much more to buying an Abit BH6 or the BE6? I'm really aimming for the BE6, just because of the UltraDMA66. I'll see. Thanks again for the info.

The BE6 supports UDMA66 and 768MB RAM vs. 384MB for the BH6. There are quite some people having disk problems with the BE6 though. The BH6 is dirt cheap and a hassle free mainboard.

What software actually makes use of the AGP 2X anyway? I don't run many games, mostly photoshop, IE5 and visual studio..

Might just switch my LX6 with my brother's BH6.. nobody will know the difference as he's got a Celery in there.. hehe

Hey I contacted matrox today via email here is there response

                      Dear Sir,
As long as you have the latest motherboard BIOS it should work but only at
1X AGP as this is all the LX boards support.
