You have to admit its hard not to expect more from Matrox then any other video card company. These products have been so outstanding that you just assume that the sales and marketing department can keep up with the guys and gals with the hammers and saws building these video cards.

Delays are all part of the game, and really ought to be expected for a brand new product that is using virtually untested new hardware and software. BUT I really think Matrox could have handled things a bit better.

The last time I ordered a new computer for myself was late 1993, and included the new Matrox MGA II, with the then unheard of 4Mb of video RAM on board. But there was a problem. The vendor couldn't get the specified board from Matrox. The solution was to send the computer out with the 2Mb version of the card, and then send the correct board to me a couple months later when it came in.

I would like to suggest that this might be a solution for Matrox's G400 Max customers if there are going to be protracted delays. Send the available base model, to be exchanged for the Max when it finally did get into regular production. But I think as a matter of good customer relations Matrox should have offered to do this as soon as delays started running over a month.

My own situation is that I was set to order my new machine back in May, when I ran into a couple of Matrox representatives at the Robotics show in Detroit. I mentioned that I was dissappointed that Matrox had fallen behind in their graphics cards, and that it looked like I was going to have to use a competitor's board. This was when I first learned about the G400 being released in June. So I went looking for information on the card, and liking what I found, delayed ordering the computer.

I placed the order in the end of June, but was told that the G400 max wouldn't be in until the 2nd week in July. Everything else goes on "hold" until it arrived. Mid July comes around, and checking back, the news is "mid August". Now, here we are, and the expected date is "sometime in September."

Fortunately this is only replacing my home PC, and while frustrating, it isn't going to kill me to wait a bit longer. Besides, the prices on the other components I'm planning on adding after I get the base machine just keep dropping. BUT, my NT workstation at work is coming off lease in December and I get to spec. out it's replacement. How likely do you think it is that I'll be including another Matrox card, G400 or otherwise, when I'm only given a three week window between ordering the new machine and losing the old one? Not very...

                Hollyberri,
Quoting matrox' customer-support: "it um might um ship in the end of next week" (and being aware of having said exactly this the week before (hehe).

for me this is confusing in the form that

I would never be sure when it actually would ship
I can't make up my mind wether to cancel or not
Slartibartfast,
A public statement would make me more eased. A sentence like this from the customer-supp would make me relaxed: "since the average production capacity is 15 max' a week, you are number 1324 and we are in the 12xx, you can except your card shipped in exactly (!) four weeks."

Again: That easy and I get it overwith

Not to be an ass or anything, the support there is polite and they do the best they can, I'm sure ¦ )

Bah! I'm just too hyped over that MAX

                Cheers,
                Fish.

Seriously tish, I understand and agree that a statement from Matrox would be a more satisfying and responsible solution than what they have done-- which is, say nothing.

Have you ever considered that it may not be possible for them to make any kind of reliable statement at all?

Suppose, just suppose, that the NEC FAB that Matrox relies on is seriously behind, or seriously screwed. Imagine Matrox screaming at the FAB manager into one phone, "Dammit, we paid for those chips, and now you can't tell us when we'll get them or how many???!" while on the phone in the other ear is an angry customer, screaming "Dammit, we paid for those cards, and now you can't tell us when we'll get them???"

Well, what is Matrox supposed to say? Our FAB screwed us? You don't care about that; why would you? But on the other hand, they don't have the information you want, either, because the FAB's numbers are not reliable.

This is just a fantasy on my part. But please try to remember that Matrox is not some inviolate corporation, screwing the little people. In some senses, they're "little people" too...anybody want to confirm that this NEC FAB is also responsible for supplying hmmmm, say...TNT2 chips? By comparison with that market, Matrox is little people indeed, for a chip manufacturer.

I'm not saying they're handling this well. We already know that Matrox doesn't have good social skills when things go wrong. I'm just suggesting that maybe there's more to the story than meets the eye, and perhaps a little perspective is in order.

Absolutely. Everything is a situation, and I know of course that all people, all the way from NEC's cleaning laydies to Matrox' customer support do their best.
By golly, the information I composed my statement from is thin like paper. It looked very logically from my view though...

blah blah now I've heard the FAB in Ireland just started producing MAX'es so we'll all get one in not so many more weeks

                    Thanks for replying,

Gee It must be hot and humid in some parts of the world still....Lets sue everyone!
I see plenty of 3dFX 3500 in NJ and TNT Ultras on the shelves and computer shows. Screw Hercules. But There are NO G400 on the Net not just Maxes but "regular guy" G400's. Forget about stores. I can't understand. How hard is it to produce a stinkin Video card and put it in a box? It must be "Summer Hours" in Matrox land.
And this VW Jetta stuff... That "made in Mexico" ride is on lots in my part of the world. What a stupid comparison I might add.

And how does Maggi get a month off for vacation????? Damm!
