Oh yea, i just saw the thing on opengl.
Opengl will never die, or become old.

It has been around for a long time, and is the only api supported in all current operateing systems, and that every card manufacturer can code for without haveing to pay anything
    for example
glide cannot be used on anything else but 3dfx's card, and i am not sure if it runs on other os's (it may, not sure)
for direct 3d to work, you HAVE to have a microsoft operating system, not includeing nt 3, 4, windows 3.1, and dos (you can't use it on those operateing systems) So, for example, you just downloaded linux, you cannot use direct3d because you don't have a microsoft operateing system, and cannot use glide because you don't have a 3dfx product, so... without opengl, you would be left with software....
with all those linux guru's out their who hate any os that ain't free, opengl will never die.

Scout - you should sort out those IRQs.
Having the G400, USB, and 3com all on IRQ 10 cannot be helping things.

Get the G400 onto it's own IRQ, with nothing but an IRQ holder with it. Make sure it is IRQ9 or higher.

Disable any ports (USB, com, lpt) that you are not actually using, to open up more IRQs.

Also, there are some "stripped down" drivers available for your 3com card. There is a known issue with the G400 and certain 3com drivers. 3com's solution was to offer the stripped down drivers.

Figure out which one of these cards is yours, and get the "unsupported" Minimum install drivers.

(in addition to sorting out your IRQs)

            Hi!,
I'm sick of reading the same things!
            1) OpenGL is dead= It is NOT! In fact it is far better from DirectX. OK most games use D3D nowadays but OpenGL supports many features which are not found in D3D. That "extension" thing means that you have to add an extension to the Q2 ENGINE to support EMBM the OGL itself supports it and it did support did before D3D. Anyway there is a Q2 bump mapped scene at: http://www.matrox.com/mga/3d_gaming/...wer_render.htm which is in fact a demo of a new API developed for the G400 series.

            2) My system froze blah blah it doesn't do that blah I heard that blah: YOU CANNOT PREDICT SYSTEM INCOMPATIBLITIES! It might seem OK in paper but this is not the case in real world! It is not a G400 specific problem it is just a damn incompatibility nobody can predict!

The G400 installed without problems in my system. I was lucky. Ok the performance is not what I expected but I'm not going to start crying oh I get 0,01 #3dmark less than userx! All I want to do is be able to do my job!

            phew...

Also are their any known conflicts with what I have and hte G400:

P2-400 (before aug 1998 = no locked multiplier)
                128 generic pc 100
                Abit BE-6
                fireball ka plus 13.6
                MX300 sound
                cl dvd 6x
                cl dxr2
                generic 56k
                d-link network card
                and soon to have a g400 =P

also, i have my 400 overclocked to 450 with 4.5x100, what does that do exactly? just make my processor faster? If i change the FSB to 112 and my multiplier to 4.0 and get 448, do i get everything else faster (hd graphic etc) instead of just the processor? ok i know that last one probably wasnt worded correctly but help would be appreciated

IRQs can be changed in the PnP section of your BIOS.

Set the option "NO" for PnP OS, and assign the IRQs by PCI slot. Most mobos will share the IRQ of the AGP with a PCI slot (usually PCI1), so it's a good idea to leave that PCI slot empty if possible, or use a card in that slot that does not require an IRQ.

For removing old video drivers, first check in your control panel, add/remove programs, and make sure any driver software there is removed. Then go into safe mode, and check your device manager. If any duplicate or old drivers show up there, just remove them. If you're really ambitios, you can go to your registry editor, and search for remenants with the search function (search for tnt, diamond, whatever).

My USB also shows up in Window, even when disabled in my BIOS. For this, just go to your device manager in windows, select that device, and check the "disable in this hardware profile" box. This will stop it from using the IRQ.

One perforance consideration for Scout255 is to move the HD to primary and the CD to slave, or to another channel.

Check the hardware review sites such as Anadtech, Aces Hardware, AGN, HardOCP, etc. and you will dicover there are some hardware issues with the new Abit BE6 and BP6 motherboards with ATA/66 capability.

As a side note it's a real bummer that Abit says they will NOT be making boards for the Athlon

my second hard drive's performance does not matter to me, and i know of the performance decrease. it doesn't matter to me, because i use it simple as one would use a jaz drive.

These mobo manufacturers that are Intel's lap dogs amuse me. People really don't buy a machine based first on the motherboard. People who want an Athlon (of which there are a great many) will look for their motherboard from among those available. If A-Bit or Asus don't make one, oh well.. then "What's the top Athlon board?"

These guys are only cutting their own throats.

It might be worthwhile to try shifting around your IDE stuff anyway.
Try disabling the UDMA66 channel, and run that drive in UDMA33 mode on the regular IDE channels.
I have heard of some people having trouble related to the DMA66 stuff...

Well all it took for my G400 + 5.21 drivers to run flawlessly was to do a fresh install of Windows 98 again. Everything is running great, no locks ups anymore, no crashes and Quake II at 1024X768 16-bit is getting between 63 and 65 FPS. Before I was getting in the low 40's so that's quite a bit of a boost. I do have one question though, I will be getting my Max on Tuesday, to be safe should I go through the entire reinstall again? or should I just plug it in in place to the G400 and away I go? Either way i'm not bothered by reinstalling again anyways since I imaged my machine to the D: drive when I was done installing everything last time except the Matrox drivers.
