Hi there Haig. The times I checked, AGP2X was always automatically detected. I never even forced it, I have to force AGP1X instead. I did have to force AGP2X with my G200 though, but that combination used to work just fine.
It looks like the auto detection/selection code is doing exactly the opposite of what it should be doing.

I have been running games in 1024x768x16, but the system still crashed at some point, not much of a difference, really.
16bpp vs. 32bpp only seems to make a change for my desktop resolution. As reported, in 32bpp the system will crash instantly when drawing the desktop, but when I select a 16bpp desktop the odds in favor for a later crash. Most of the time it will crash/lock up in a game, occasionally the system will crash/lock at startup.

1 - I tried taking sticks out and swapping, didn't get my hands on another DIMM yet (I was only able to get the same LGS7J). I'm now thinking of randomly attacking pedestrians, so consider it pending

2 - Okay, I'm going to try an EIDE setup later today.

3 - I use Shift-Click on the Reply button (open in new window). I'll check on Q2/Q3.

    I'll be back. Thanks Haig.

      Scytale blinks in

Whoo that was fun (ad 2 and 3):
      - I pulled an 'fdisk and format' trick on an EIDE drive,
      - removed all cards but the MAX,
      - installed Win98,
      - installed DX6.1 and G400 drivers from CD,
      - reset my BIOS,
      - disabled all integrated peripherals except for a single EIDE port,
      - booted Win98,
      - changed desktop to 1024x768x16.

And the system locked up. Only a few seconds after having changed the display mode. The lockup came with modest display corruption, and again with mouse cursor still alive.

I rebooted (3xCAD), and I would find myself doing just that again and again, because each time the desktop came up it would lock up, showing minor display corruption.

Not quite what I expected to happen. I checked for conflicts -fat chance with everything disabled, but just to make sure- but none found.

I guess we have eliminated all possibilities, except for:

      a) driver timing problem
      b) incompatibility G400 w/ BH6 (timing?)
      c) incompatibility G400 w/ BH6 LN BIOS
      d) incompatibility G400 w/ LGS7J RAM
      e) bad MAX
      f) Win98 (or maybe DX6.1 init) bug

I'm still going to try the OpenGL games, but since I didn't even came to run anything DirectX during the last test, I'm not expecting much different behaviour.

Hmm.. the real options you have are b-e so bye bye MAX.. sorry..

But really you can strugle with it waiting mobo BIOS/G400 BIOS/G400 driver updates without having a working system for months, like most SS7 system owners were doing last fall, or you can take it back and go with another card. It's just another graphics adapter anyway.

        (sorry )

          Scytale,

You have been a real sport. This problem is like a day time soap; appears daily and has a large viewing audience!

Hang in there, anxiously waiting for the end of the series!

Buuri, thanks for your honost reply. I'm not in a desperate (SS7-like) position though, the card works like a charm (and just as fast) in AGP1X mode, so well... taken strictly, I'm climbing the mountain just because it's there. It would be nice if we discovered some new land in the process.

SCompRacer - Thanks, we seem to be reaching the final episode of the series real soon now

And here's the final chapter, well sort of

We finally reproduced the tech demo crashes in AGP2x mode. Now for the bad news, it didn't happen on a BH6.

I don't know if this will be fixed with the next release of PD but it will be fixed for sure (at the latest) with the PD after the next PD release.

Hi Haig. The Tech Demo seems to be the most fail safe way to come to this failure. I guess it's a real tech demo after all

No sweat, Haig, I offered you to go thru all this. You're doing a great job. Thanks.

                    I've got a G400 16mb DH and have the same problem...so I sold it(they don't allow me to replace it)....losing few bucks...
I'm wondering...is this only a few "bad luck" G400's problem or is it the whole G400 series' problem.....
Should I buy another G400 ?? Try my luck again until I got a good one ???(Or there ISN'T a good one ...?!)I'm so afried that the nightmare will begin again(install...crash .....reinstall....recrash...)
                    Someone help !!
by the way ..here is my equipment

At this time there's no solid answer to that question. You could try another one, but this time you better make sure you can return it.

Hi Haig, hope you enjoyed your holidays (sure you did), sorry to wake you up again...

Remember this dreaded thread? Okay then now for the big one: Were 5.21 the drivers to fix this?

Yes, sure I did. And the first thing I did was testing AGP2X. To my not so big surprise I found that the system would still lock up.
It was a hard lock up this time, and I had to press the reset button.

                            I guess it's not fixed

                              So...

Any news from the front? Many people seem to get stuck with this AGP2X problem. I think we could do with some kind of explanation or information... Haig seems to get very silent and I am beginning to feel we are dealing with a hardware design problem...

                                FEI (for everyone's information)

I have a BH6 (not 1.1 either) with a Tekram 390F UWscsi in PCI#2 that works with g400 Max AGP2X with BM on just fine. Except for one PF on LeechFTP...but hasn't done it again. Thats 2D...likely Leech's fault anyway is my guess.

So the BH6 *can* do just fine. Something might be overlooked...or maybe not...
