Excalibur, I had the same problem with 4.51 drivers (ICDb2) and OGL games. At times, OGL games would crash like that and it was quite annoying. PD5.xx series fixed that problem for me and I don't have a memory module on my G200 and my system wasn't overclocked or overheating. Maybe there is still a possible issue?

Well, the memory module is pulled and the wait is on.

Waiting to see if The Problem will manifest itself or not. It's almost unfortunate there isn't something I know I can do that will trigger it no-questions-asked.

So, my best guess will be that after I fire up a few D3D games (Pod Racer comes to mind) at high resolution and play for a while, then get back to the GUI and fiddle, if it doesn't show itself by then, it very well may have been due to the extra 8MB module (although the "why" of it would still be unclear to me).

But, I'm not there quite yet. I'll check in when I think I've learned something.

          Greebe --

          Thanks for the uh... tip!

RE: the garbled-screen problem: So far, so good, though I feel like I'm jinxing things just by saying it.

My machine's been running for a couple hours now. I played a solid 45 minutes of Pod Racer (1024x768), EP1:TPM (1024x768), Rogue Squadron (1024x768), then surfed a bit in IE5 in several busy pages that I know have triggered the problem in the past.

And so far? No problems. Of course, the second I post this, I'm sure my screen'll turn to crap, but not yet.

If it is indeed satisfied now, what have I learned by pulling the memory module? Bad module? Or something else.

No problem on the vagueness issue. Seems to me that if it was a genuine Matrox module, it shouldn't be an issue, but hey - what do I know? I'm only a lowly consumer with moderately competent user-knowledge of such things.

RE: the Ugly Problem... another hour and some has passed and the machine still hasn't burped yet. In that time I've been opening up IE5 windows mercilessly, jumping around all over the place, reading newsgroups and message boards and (this was particularly interesting) testing out Half-Life.

Now, the interesting thing about Half-Life was that its performance on the G200 (at 1024x768/D3D) was always ever "okay", but never really "great".

Now, on the other hand, it's pretty fast, though a bit jerky (I've read that it's to be expected on a lot of boards at that resolution), but I realized that the 5.25 driver set comes with the OpenGL ICD (something I've yet to use or test), so I told Half-Life to use OpenGL instead of Direct3D and MAN was that fast! Smooth as silk @ 1024x768. First experience with OpenGL at all, and it looked great and performed admirably. I guess that's a good thing? It was certainly a nice surprise.

Now as I sit and wait for the other shoe to drop - I never trust things. My screen will probably get all screwy a couple weeks from now, thereby proving all my tests wrong.

But in the meantime, I guess I should wonder what to do with the memory module... it's nice and small.... barely weighs anything... about the size of a small cracker... Hmmmm...

I had the same problem with my Mystique G200.
I don't know that it is a coincedence but it only occured when i visited pages(internet), with macromedia flash in it. As soon as i got on a "flash" page the screen looked the same as your screenshot, and i had to reset the machine. I hadn't installed the flash player so i tried to install it. No succes, when installing flash my system crashed. All this happened with the non-certified drivers.

But now the problem is gone. Why? i don't know.

Interesting point, as this problem would ~usually~ manifest itself while I was web-browsing in some fashion or another, though I can't say that the pages in question that might've "triggered" it had Flash on them, but it's a good point.

                          Hmm.
