    My G200 Screen Corruption Problem (Update)

    Well, for what it's worth, the durned thing hasn't burped yet, so that's been since Saturday afternoon, which a LONG time for this thing NOT to exhibit any evidence of corruptness with the non-certified drivers installed. And, just for sport, I've been exercising the board a LOT in the past couple days, and I just can't break it.

    So (again, disclaimer) unless something bad happens in the near future, I'm going to have to assume that pulling the memory add-on was THE solution to this problem, though I don't know what to get out of that. Lesson learned, don't buy add-on memory? Or... I have a bad board and need a new one? Or... I have too much time on my hands? Which of these?

    Don't mess with add-on memory.

    Even the card makers follow that lesson now. When you get a G400, it's 16 or 32...no upgrade available....

        Oh how quickly everyone (including myself...) wants me to rebreak my G200! Actually, I have like... no benchmarking software or anything (I've never been much into it), so I'm clueless about how my machine is operating and would be at a loss to specify how much improved any overclocking was...

        Now, if anyone has any specific suggestions........

          Well, if you do want to give it a shot, MGATweak is definitely the utility for it. As for benchmarks, Quake (of course) if you are a gamer and have it. If not, I think Tirtanium is one of the better benchmarks geared towards game performance, for both OGL and D3D. I always forget the address for it, but there is a link to it at http://www.pcbenchmarks.com . Of course, 3DMark is widely used also ( http://www.3dmark.com ). If you just want to see an increase in 2D performance (why bother overclocking for that?!?), Wintune from http://www.winmag.com would do it (use at your own risk).

            Funny thing, I've been having the EXACT same problem, and it usually only happens when surfing.

            This only started happening after I upgraded my CPU. I thought it was a SS7 problem, and in the meantime ordered another video card to remain nameless.

            I removed my memory upgrade, and it seems to have stopped the problem. There are some BIOS settings that I changed also (I disabled DRAM read around write and DRAM pipeline read).

            BTW, my upgrade is a genuine Matrox item that I've had for 4 months. The problems only showed up 2 weeks ago, for whatever reason.

              oh, and yes, it overclocks better now, and I haven't seen any real-world performance decreases. The benchmarks are a bit lower (obviously), but now I don't have to reboot 3 times during my nightly net wandering.

                You guys are scaring me. I thought I was fortunate to land a 8mb sgram for 10 bucks (from a fellow netizen) and now I'm waiting for my video to go nuts. Isn't it enough to chase down the bad drivers, let alone hardware????

                  I also have the G200 Millenium SGRam with the Matrox 8meg addon board and it works fine. Original BIOS and older drivers. Dunno which # the Win95 ones are (pre 4.33) but I'm using OS/2 2.21 drivers which have no problems.

                  Just wish I could get '95 to shutdown completely with my Panasonic DVD installed :-)

                    I actually am a gamer, despite the fact that *gasp* I don't own Quake - imagine the horror! I don't know how I managed to not ever get it, though. I've been planning on it for a while now...

                    In any case, thanks for the pointers; I'm gonna do some poking around now.

                    So you pulled your memory board, too, and that cleared it up? Hmmm. (I didn't mess with any of my BIOS settings) Maybe the extra CPU push causes the board (when it has 16MB) to... umm... do stuff it shouldn't? I can't really imagine what the problem would be specifically, because it seems strange that adding memory (to a board that supports more memory) causes this problem (maybe?)...

                    I dunno. All I know is, my machine seems to be happier for the removal of the board. Maybe they screwed up the manufacture of a whole bunch of those things?

                      Could it be a power problem? I ditched my K6-2 for a K6-III, which my motherboard doesnt officially support. It seems this processor pulls more current that the mobo should be able to supply. Perhaps the lost of wattage/voltage/amperage (underage?) manifested itself into a poor memory recharge?
