Hell, if it gave us 115fps, I am sure we would all want to do 320x240.

Well sure they might make it compatible with P2/Celeron, but you can be sure it won't have nearly as much performance.
Celeron 566@877 1.8V, 256meg generic PC-100 RAM (running at CAS2) Abit BH6, G400 16meg DH@150/200, Western Digital Expert 18gig, Ricoh mp7040A(morphed to mp7060A) Pioneer 6X DVD slot load, Motorola Cable Modem w/DEC ethernet card, Soundblaster Live Value Ver. 2, Viewsonic GT 775

Actually, when it comes to FPS, may I say this:

Yesterday I fired up my old BattleZone game. I installed, updated and played away. "Wow" I thought. soooo smoooth. and look at those explosions. That "large assets" patch surely made a difference!

Then I read a little more in the render.cfg file. Found out I could increase the res. and add mip-mapping and such. I ended up playing in 1024x16 (no 32 mode here, baby). That I found a little laggy, so I pitched down the res to 800x600. Perfect!!

I checked the FPS. I got 'bout 120 in 640x480, 60 in 1024 and 'round 80 in 800x600. I stayed with 800x600. When that hover-tank slogs up-down left-right like every other smooth hovering craft, the FPS REALLY does matter. I couldn't live with that 60 fps no way! I had to go back to 80.

What can I say? I have a 19" screen always at 85hz, and wow, do Battlezone GLIDE with a Max.

In q3 however, with mose-look the situasion is completely different. There I can live well with 40.

Whenever people say "I'm a quality/speed person. most quality actually.", I belive they've just bought a new G400 and have only got time to test Q3@1024. Not any old Battlezone game.

The old pool shooter had won many a game in his life. But now it was time to hang up the cue. When he did, all the other cues came crashing to the floor. "Sorry," he said with a smile.

That's already been covered. Of course it's going to be faster on the chips with more 3D optimisations.

But it will be still be faster than the general purpose ICD.

See? So now even you poor P2/celeron users will get boosts after all! not those boosts with simd sets, but hey, we others have paid good money to get some SSE!!

When this girl at the museum asked me who I liked better, Monet or Manet, I said, "I like mayonnaise." She just stared at me, so I said it again, louder. Then she left. I guess she went to try to find some mayonnaise for me.

Yes and just why shouldn't the newest (at least newer) CPU's run faster? Maybe the next round of systems can have Turbo buttons again, so we can slow our systems down so you don't feel so bad.
Bo ho, stop those mean auful CPU companies from releasing faster and better chips right now. And those B@$+@%D video companies, I wanna go back to feeling good about my M3D card, so just stop it.
Get over it. You'll get what improvement you get and we'll get the improvements we'll get. Copermine buyers will get better improvement and P8/K8 buyers better still. If you don't like it, don't make the rest of use listen to you whinne about it. Do that on a 3dfx board. Let us B!++(H about things Matrox does we can't do anything about, and fined ways to do them.

Well, it looks like Matrox is finally going to do to their OGL drivers what I've heard Nvidia has been doing all along. I have heard that the Nvidia OGL drivers are written is such a way that it detects what game you are trying to run and runs a specialized subroutine optimized for that game. Maybe that is why when they first came out with their OGL drivers they were not all that good then all of a sudden they got very good. Either way at least Matrox is willing to be up front about it.

That was my impression as a former NVIDIA owner, target the high end and trickle down to the low end a year later. I like knowing what the real deal is, even if I don't get any benefit from it, being strung along with promises sucks.

My beef with NVIDIA was mostly about their raising false expectations and waiting too long for the card to work properly with something other than a Slot 1 system, it's the other guy's fault didn't track for me. Matrox has done much better in that regard, they have more stable drivers on SS7 with the G400 at least, glad I missed the G200 days, and if they don't do a K6-2/3 version of the minigl I won't miss it, I'd rather a real ICD any day if I ever do find a use for OGL.

If I may whine, I want faster D3D drivers, I mean it should be faster than a TNT 1 in all resolutions, not just high resolutions. If Matrox would target the D3D drivers for specific processors in the same way they are targeting OGL drivers that would be cool.
What would be even cooler are modular drivers for D3D and OGL with all the fpu intensive bits gathered into a module with source made available so you could optimise it yourself. I'm sure there are a million hacker who would get the thing humming in a matter of weeks for free.

BTW, what do you call someone who complains a lot about whiners?
