  • More TurboGL stuffand an Ant Rant =)

Ant rounded up the reviews from the other guys he was in Canada with last week, and posted links to their reviews and benchmarks:
    http://www.murc.ws/news.html

And included is a little Ant Rant:

"It amazes me that certain people have been screaming for Matrox to do something and get driver performance up and yet now that Matrox have clearly shown themselves to be fully committed to doing this by releasing new drivers, beta ICDs, an overclocker and now soon a TurboGL driver some of these same people are still whining and moaning like spoilt little brats because TurboGL doesn't support their 486. Grow up, get a life or go buy that TNT2 you feel is so much better. The MURC is very much NOT a "fan site" it is a "users" site and I reflect the consensus of user feeling and will criticise Matrox when criticism is due but that does not mean they constantly have to be criticised for everything. When credit is due I give them credit, and credit is now due, well done Matrox and keep up the good work! ...end of Ant Rant "

    Well put, Antman

I thought he said it very well myself. Heck, I have a G200 Mill SD, which was supposed to be limited to the 4.33 drivers, with a K6-3. I can't use the Beta ICD or TurboGL, but thanks to the new drivers (and a bit of OC), I've still managed to increase my performance by 50% since I got the card 2? 3? monthes ago. I'd say that was putting some effort into the drivers myself.

A celeron is not a 486, and ignoring that fact that it walked all over everything else when it came out does not help.

I don't really care though, by the time the tgl comes out (oct) I'll be intel's bitch, I mean, a p3 owner.

Bravo! I have been a little hard on some posters as of late. This is amazing. I cant believe how much better life is with the g400 vs the same period with the G200. But then again I was here in 8/98. Things with this card will only improve. And the MURC forums are better than ever!

I have a G200 getting a Max soon. One question, I know that the turbogl rhing is for g400, but will the new drivers when they come out give my g200 a boost a I have a P3, or is all the effort towards the g400. If it is not a bad thing because as the guy above says the speed of my g200 has improved alot over the last year. Just asking as otherwise I won't have to download them and it will save my bill.

That's technology for you. It always tends to progress forward. It is peoples reactions to progress that seems to regress.

              WAY TO GO ANT!!!!!

All of the whiners seem to be forgetting something very important: Matrox obviously has a team dedicated to get the best possible performance out of the G400 and OpenGL, and this team is separate from the one working on the ICD. This all starts with the P3, Athlon, and then I am sure they will find more optimizations to make for the miniGL's, all the while the ICD team is busy making a complete ICD with better support, and better optimizations. This is very good news, indeed, for OpenGL/G400 users with all different systems.

                Well said, Ant!!!

Oh Boy, do I remember this time a year ago and how fustrated and angry we all were getting at Matrox for their silence and unfulfilled promises regarding the G200 ICD.
I will give them credit for the turnaround. Matrox IS working very hard on new Drivers and the ICD. And even more important is the fact that they are listening to the users...To Us!!

It's just amazing. Has anyone seen the benchmarks in Anandtech's G400 Revisited article? The Max beats the competition in OpenGL (Q3test) gaming performance and then loses in, well, Direct3D (Expendable of all things).

On October 8th or thereabouts (this is Matrox we're talking about), with a fast processor, the G400 Max might very well provide the fastest OpenGL gaming performance of all current generation boards.

At the same time, it might be edged out slightly in the D3D department by the Voodoo3 and the TNT2 Ultra.

                  The gods must be crazy.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting just a little bit misty.

I wonder if he had the EMBM turned on with the G400 when he ran those benchmarks

Frankly, the current situation with drivers is an improvement over the frequency of updates from NVIDIA. Note, I said updates, doesn't imply the drivers got any better. It's good that Matrox is updating their drivers, but asking for praise to be heaped on them is a bit much. Coming from one to the other, it is what I expect from a video card company now. Matrox is finally doing what other companies do with regard to regular updates? Wouldn't know the difference here, I am used to it already.

I want to rant and whine about all the people who rant and whine about all the people ranting and whining at MURC.

I just can't understand why some people always have to complain!

Now "TurboGl P3/Athlon only" and before that...

                        That's all!

                          Hi all,

Things have improved quite a lot during the recent months, faster and more stable ogl, continuing good d3d performance (Revolt runs very fast on my g200 and looks cool too!), a very useful overclocker (mgatweak gui) and in a few weeks the TurboGL arrives.

                          Unfortunately I don't have a P3 or a G400, but still have a G200 8 MB on a celeron 333@416.

Does anybody know if there will be something like TurboGL for the g200?

What pisses me off is that TurboGL can't support classic 3DNow! set that's on K6-2 and K6-3 as well. I wonder just how big of a difference those few extra instructions on Athlon just make..

                            Damn you Matrox for that!

Well I'm really fed up I've got a valve powered 86 and Matrox arn't doing a Turbogl driver for that, well damn them.
