  • G400 Max Boxed versus G400 Max OEM

    Hello there,

I would like to know what are the HARDWARE
differences, if any, between a G400 Max Boxed
and a G400 Max OEM (Ramdac speed, core speed, ram type and speed, ...) ???

It is of course because here in France I can
save a lot of money buying an OEM one, but
I want to be sur of the product.

    Thanks for the answer.

G400 Max OEM? I can be wrong, but it´s the first time I´ve heard of such thing. I had the idea that the MAX only exists as a retail version.

Actually, I went yesterday in a computer
store where I have been told that they
have had G400 Max OEM which was 20% cheaper
than a boxed version because there is no
software bundle. The reseller told me that
they will have another supply next week.

SO I WANT TO BE SUR BEFORE BUYING.

Beware that the OEM version probably won't carry any kind of warranty beyond the store's return policy.

At least in North America, there is not and will be no OEM version of the Max.

Watch out if someone tries to sell you an "OEM" Max. Matrox has told their OEM buyers that there will not be a "non-retail" version of the max.

            Thanks for the infos !

So, if I try to sum up:

            1) According to Matrox, G400 Max OEM does not
            exist...

            2) ...and IF I buy such product that does'nt
exist the warranty may be void.

            3) The two statements above assume that this
is a true G400 Max, but another possibility
is that my reseller transform a regular
            Dual-Head G400 into a G400 Max (by adding a
fan, we have already seen it in France with
            false Pentium and false K6...)

But, if it is really a true G400 Max (I know
for sur that the SGRAM must be rated 5 ns)would you advise to buy ?

I would simply ask the dealer how come he has gotten hold of a G400 version that even the producer itself doesn't know of.... let him fry a bit.

If he doesn't come up with a reasonable answer, don't buy it, if he has a plausible explanation then buy it.

Another way is to ask him to show you the card, (see if the fan looks "homeattachet" and make him slot it in an computer and show you the desktop properties (could be faked to though).

If you buy the card and you find out it's homemade, you can always threaten him with lawsuits if he doesn't return your money.

No such beast as OEM MAX...the guy is probably just an idiot, and thinks all G400s are called "MAX"...

Here in the Netherlands there are several shops offering OEM MAXes. They are a bit cheaper and have 360MHz RAMDAC. At least that's what they say, they offer all the other versions as well just no retail. It's not a mistake. Of course it doesn't mean they actually saw one or ever could deliver.

Could also be the VGA2TV adapter cable missing !

We have several offers here in Germany for a regular G400 32MB DH 'bulk' that are lacking that particular adapter and ordering it aside costs about 20 US-$ ...

When I had an old 486 DX2 66 MHz, win3.11 took 20 sec to boot.

Now I have dual P3-500 and win2k takes 1 min to boot (including my on-board scsi detecting my HD's every damn time).

I have an Amiga 3000 that takes, well, no time to boot. Flick the switch and it's on.
