  • Some new findings on Quake 3 with TurboGL drivers!!

Ok I got some new findings:

Let me give you my system specs and my Quake 3 settings again.I have a Pentium III 450 overclocked to 558Mhz with my Matrox G400 Max (32 bit Z buffer enabled)

Using Quake 3 which I have set all the options to high and I have sound disabled this time.

    Color Depth - 32bit
    Full screen - on
    lighting - vertex
    geometric detail - high
    texture detail - full
    texture quality - 32bit
    texture filter - trilinear

    my results:

    640 by 480 - 63.9 fps
    800 by 600 - 42.6 fps
    1024 by 768 - 27.6 fps

When I changed Trilinear filtering to Bilinear filtering (while all the other settings are the same as above) here are my results.

    640 by 480 - 78.6 fps
    800 by 600 54.7 fps
    1024 by 768 - 34 fps

When I disable 32bit Z buffer with Bilinear filtering (while all the other settings are same as above)

    640 by 480 - 85.7 fps
    800 by 600 - 66.3 fps
    1024 by 768 - 42.8 fps

Now I get similar results as Ant. Only difference is that I am using bilinear filtering and I have 32bit Z buffer disabled.

    Regards,
    Manoj Mahtani

Don't use trilinear filtering since it has around a 30% fillrate performance hit on all 3D cards at the moment. Only the TNT1/2 gets away with less than 10% since they use trilinear dithering which is a very ugly approximation and mostly looks worse than bilinear.

Hmm Manoj that may explain a lot. Just to recap on the TurboGL drivers I tested they were based on PD 5.12 so maybe there was no 32-bit Z enabled in OpenGL. There is still the fact though that I had trilinear filtering enabled, but then again maybe this just did not work in the beta.

Change too lightning lighting. I dont't think that Ant had those ugly vertex lighting active at his tests.Maybe I'm wrong..

          Hi Manoj,

With your last settings my Q3 results went up also:

          640x480 80.2
          800x600 70.1
          1024x768 46.4

Well lets wait for Ant benchmarks, he said in another topic that he was going to test the relased TGL as soon as possible.

          Regards,
          Ricardo

            Hi Manoj,

I tested with only 128Meg and got the some results. Maybe it's the quality of the ram, I'm using PC133 EMS HSDRAM, EMS claims that it's the fastest around, they even say that in a ASUS P3B-F it worked at 150 Mhz. If I overclock my P3 to 560 I get (with 128Meg):

            640x480 88.1
            800x600 73.4
            640x480 47.3

            I will try with my old 128Meg PC100 CAS3.

              Hi Manoj,

I had only a slight decrease with my old memory:

              640x480 76.8
              800x600 68.3
              1024x768 45.8

Our systems are quite different, so it's difficult to compare.

Hi, I tested Q3Test also and I found that with HQ settings (with light map not vertex) and with the texture quality set to MAX the game won't start at 1280x960, not with biliear nor Trilinear filtering. Did this happen to anyone else ???

I also discovered that with the same system spec like Ant but with bilinear filtering I get the same scores as he did in the Beta test... He said he will check the new drivers out and inform us.

ManojM , why the hell did you choose vertex lightning ? It is butt ugly
Choose lightmap lightning and retest .

                    Hi!

I chose Vertex lighting because if I choose lightmap lighting then there will be a performance hit.

In any case since you requested I did some benchmarking again.

My system: Pentium III 450 overclocked to 558Mhz, 128megs of PC133 SDRAM with G400 Max (not overclocked)

Using Quake 3 which I have set all the options to high and I have sound disabled again.

                    Color Depth - 32bit
                    Full screen - on
                    lighting - lightmap
                    geometric detail - high
                    texture detail - full
                    texture quality - 32bit
                    texture filter - bilinear
                    I have disabled 32bit Z buffer!!!

                    my results:

What I did this time was that I uninstalled TurboGL and did the benchmarking and then installed it again and did the benchmarking so you will see the difference.

                    Without TurboGL:

                    Demo1:
                    640 by 480 - 46.8 fps
                    800 by 600 - 44.5 fps
                    1024 by 768 - 33.5 fps

                    With TurboGL:

                    Demo1:
                    640 by 480 - 77.4 fps
                    800 by 600 - 56.7 fps
                    1024 by 768 - 36.7 fps

So now you can see with lightmap lighting the scores go down. Also you can see the improvement with TurboGL. The improvement is big with 640 by 480 and 800 by 600 but with 1024 by 768, the improvement is very small.

Now my scores are no where close to Ant's scores and from other reviewers.

Ricardo why don't you also benchmark with lightmap lighting and lets compare our scores?

                    Regards,
                    Manoj Mahtani

This topic belongs in the Matrox Gaming forum, but since Ant's here.. this is what I get:

Ants settings, his fps first, then mine, then with the 5.30 ICD
                      66.0 ¦ 38.4 ¦ 36.3 fps: 800x600
                      42.4 ¦ 25.3 ¦ 24.2 fps: 1024x768

I have a P3 450@504 and 192mb ram. And the Max (not overclocked).

                        Ricardo:

I got higher scores than you at 640 by 480 but at higher resolutions (800 by 600 and 1024 by 768) you got higher scores.

Is it because of your whooping 512 megs of Ram?

I only have 128 megs of ram but then I have my Pentium III 450 overclocked to 558mhz where you are running your Pentium III 500 at default speed.

                        Lets wait for Ant's scores!

                        Regards,

Manoj, actually since lightmap lighting is only 2-pass and the G400 can do multitexturing, there is no performance hit. I have just tested it, try it for yourslef, it is true.
