  • G400MAX and ABIT BE6 boot problem !

    Hi guys !

Just a little problem I'm looking for a solution to:

Whenever I boot my PC, with my G400MAX and ABIT BE6, the following happens:
"NON-SYSTEM DISK - REPLACE AND PRESS ENTER"

When I push reset, the PC boots all over again, and there isn't any problems.

This only happends when I turn my PC on and not when I reboot.

My G400MAZ is on IRQ 9 and the UDMA66 controller is on IRQ10.

I hope you can help me - and I don't know if this is enough or you need more details, in that case, let me know.

looks like a floppy is still in the drive... or some problems with the HD... I never heard of such an issue with a MAX and this board... check your internal connections.

As Zwisch says, try diconnecting and reconnecting the drive. Maybe even try booting with a disk in the drive. Then eject it when asked. Your 3.5 drive may be going bad.

        Hi Double,

What happens if you enter the Bios setup first and exit without saving ?

It might be that your HD has some problems spinning up before the OS is trying to access it.

Do a search for similar postings on the site here. I had to do the same thing with my BE6 Version 1 board. I tried EVERYTHING, but to no avail. Have since switched to a Soyo board and am still having some freeze-up problems but nothing compared to the BE6. The BE6 appears to be the only motherboard out there that has a major compatibility problem with the G-400.....good luck!

The BE6 has absolutely no compatibility issues with the G400MAX.... It works perfectly. The problem has to be in other hardware interopability...

Try setting IDE delay to 3-4 seconds, see what happens...

biggest problem with this board was when the USb was sharing with the ultra 66, according to Abit. This should now be solved with a BIOS update. but even there, I trully doubt that this is the case since he is not even getting to the hard drive.

Try to get in the BIOs and disable USB. If this is the case, you will know.

Double, it sounds like your system is booting up too fast for your harddrive, you wouldn't have a W.D. harddrive would you?

Nothing is wrong my my FDD and there's no disk there.
Everything worked just fine with the same configuration and my old graphics card.

I think its a problem between the UDMA 66 onboard and the MAX since it cant detect the controller initially.

I'll try disabling the USB IRQ assignment.

                    Well guys !

                    I found a solution........

Instead of disabling everything I added a 3 second time delay to the IDE channels - and guess what, it worked !!!

Perhaps that leaves the BIOS time to assign the correct IRQ before booting the HD - who knows ?

What you just did was allow the hard drive enough time to spin up before the system attempted to boot off of it. I've experienced this problem at work with an older Pentium system. The hard drive was taking too long to spin up, and wasn't ready when the system attempted to boot from it.

Well, if my HD needed time to spin up, then how come it worked perfectly for the last three months with my old graphics card and the same system ?

The only thing new to my system is the G400 MAX !!

I'm hanging on to the IRQ thing....

Perhaps your old graphics card took longer initializing at boot up (you know.. when the video card displays its stuff right before the rest of the system BIOS comes up). I know that my Matrox card seems quicker than the TNT I had in mine before. One other thing- you didn't by chance have an option for quick power on self test turned off before, and now have it on? The longer self-test might allow enough time for the hard drive to spin up.
