  • Next Drivers?

Has anyone heard when the next set of drivers might appear and what the improvements may be? Better OGL, TGL for K6 processors, DX7 optimisations etc?

Matrox already stated they would be re-writing for full DX7 support. They won't say a word about the TurboGL.

When? Take a chill....they just released 5.30 a couple weeks ago. Give them some time . A re-write of the drivers for DX7 can't be pulled off overnight...

So they had several weeks to fix the busmastering problems with (Epox) MVP3 boards. Great.. 5.30 beta 6, the ones just before the 5.30 final didn't had those problems. So, they already got the solution somewhere.

*sigh* yes, I'll keep whining and complaining over those damn drivers until I get acceptable ones, 'coz it has taken TOO LONG. More than a year ago, we G200 users already complained about lacking OpenGL drivers, and yet, even today I can't even play Quake2 with a descent framerate. Heck, withe the 5.30 drivers I can't play it at all! I guess it's too late for a refund, huh?

Anybody can send me the 5.30 beta 6 drivers? I guess that would fix a lot of the problems I have today...

Can't pull a decent framerate? Heck, with high VQ settings and a Mill 16MB SD I'm pulling 38fps in demo1 at 800x600x16, yes that is with an Epox board and the 5.25 drivers. Perfectly acceptable to me, I'd rather that than 60fps of fast moving s**t. Seriously doubt that there would have been any dif for us non-PIII users in the 5.3 drivers anyway.

I am perfectly chilled, and I ain't complaining. My Max is running fine on the 5.3 drivers.

I just want the moon-on-a-stick - yesterday preferably!

                        Randy,

Here's where your logic breaks down...

5.30.006 and 5.30.007 are different beasties. 007 has more performance features turned on.

The problem is not your chip, it's your motherboard. The VIA and ALI chipsets JUST AREN'T STABLE. Every single time a video card manufacturer tries to turn on full performance for a set of drivers (and I'm not just talking Matrox here, I'm also talking ATI, nVidia, S3), it breaks on SS7 chipsets. The next driver rev. will, invariably, turn off the performance if it detects that chipset.

So suck it up. Either get a real chipset or drop back to 5.13 or 5.25.

I'm not arbitrarily bashing SS7 or AMD. But SOMEBODY dropped the ball hardcore on these chipsets. Out of 3 machines I've built with them, one had no problems at all ever (with patches as appropriate)... but 2 just NEVER worked with TNT cards, and I had to resort to using PCI boards.

*shrug* sorry I'm ranting so much.

                        - Ash

I've a K6-2 333, which certainly should be enough to play Q2 with a descent framerate (40 or so) in 640x480. Now I get somewhere around 20 (timedemo1). I'm positive that's NOT because of the limits of the hardware, but just slow OpenGL drivers.

A while ago, somebody who did had access to the beta 6 drivers told here in the forums he didn't had problems with these drivers and his Epox MVP3 board. When the 5.30.7 release came out: *poof* and 3D was a no-go.

From where I'm standing, Matrox has left G200 users out in the cold dust since the beginning. I can't afford buying a new mainboard + proc, and I can't afford buying a new videocard. So for the moment I'm stuck with it, as I have last 1+ year.

And all they are saying when I mail them about the situation is "we're looking into it". Well, I've become an EXPERT in translating Matrox' statements into real-world statements, and this would translate into something like "try again in 4 weeks, perhaps we can tell you it'll only take 3 more weeks before we address this silly goof-up from our side.".

I hope you can understand why I'm pissed at Matrox.

Gurm: that's crap. Ok, I can't do AGP 2X, but I don't care. Perhaps the VIA boards are different from the intel boards, but that doesn't make them bad, unreliable or unstable. My system is running perfectly stable.

And what's wrong with letting the *user* decide which speed-optimalizations he wishes to use?? *I* want to be in control.

As far of the effect of those optimalizations: they are almost all minor tweaks, getting 1-2fps more in Q3. Well woohoo.. How come NVidia cards are soooo much faster in plain OpenGL compared to Matrox cards? That's not because of the hardware, or those minor tweaks, but because of the software and software only.
Matrox should get there softwarepart right, and then start addressing those speed-tweaks, not the other way around, because it has no effect.
