Some responses (this thread has gotten WAAAAY out of control):

PaulS:

The reason for still having Millennium is that the system requirements are substantially lower. Millennium will still run nicely on a lower-end Pentium (i.e. 133 or so with 32megs) whereas Win2k really needs a mid-level P2 with 64 or 128 megs to be happy.

Atysoe:

The problem here is that those of us with access to the good drivers have kinda agreed not to give 'em out.

RobM:

Nothing. Nada. Ignores it. Also ignores anything in the Autoexec that isn't a variable SET line. Won't run DOS mode proggies on boot. Won't load DOS device drivers in the Config.sys. Won't start to anything but the GUI.

motub:

Holly, you REALLY don't want to get into the world of warez. Well, maybe you do. E-mail me and we'll "discuss" the matter. Hehe. And yes, I know ALL ABOUT prettied up 16-bit code. HP finally has 32-bit printer drivers and guess what? They want you to PAY for them! ARGH!

paulCs:

Didn't mean to bash you. My thoughts about the register is that they mean well, but get so many rumors in there passed off as news that it detracts from their overall believability...

marshmallowman:

If a 16-bit app. is written correctly, the 16-bit emulator (winoldap) will run it quite nicely. But the percentage of programs written to spec. for 16-bit windows was alarmingly low because windows sucked so bad that people made lots of workarounds.

therock:

The current "beta" drivers don't work very well under RC2 or higher, because beginning with RC2 M$ declared that nobody could use non-DX7 drivers. So unless you have access to the DX7 Alpha4 drivers, you're kinda SOL.

Whew! Is that everyone!?

And yes, Holly - your ... err... umm... whatever Jorden is (are you two officially engaged yet?) threatened to have you "deal with" me if I didn't change the sig.

Hmmm,

well I already checked out all the IRC channels for Win2k stuff and it appears that TNT and voodoo drivers are widely avaliable on EFnet. And Win2k does look like a hell of an improvement over NT4 and 98.

All I really want to do is get rid of that damned piece of crap called Win98 and be able to do low poly modeling and insert it into a realtime D3D game engine without rebooting into another OS. Boy does 98 handle memory badly, I cant even run Photoshop and 3DS Max simultaniously without having to reboot my system.

I Think Microsoft should get a grip, if they really are keeping video drivers out of public hands. The whole NT no D3D thing has pissed off a lot of 3D artists.

At the moment I'm thinking how cool it would be once DX7 is out on a proper OS. If developers like Kinetix add options like bumpmapping in 3DS MAX viewports I might forgive a few people for making me wait so long. Being a 3D artist is hard enough without all the added complications of flakey incomplete OS's.

Anyway thats my moan, take care all and have a good one.

Vikingman, may I present the contents of the WPS 'About' window:

"Microsoft Windows Printing System for the Canon BJC-610

Math Co-processor: installed (it has to say, because it dates from the Dinosaur Age where you might not have one....sigh)
System Resources: 60% free (hurrah for me!)

If I get a newer version somehow, won't it screw up all my printer's little windows and voice prompts and all that???

Gurm, babe...! I'll email you, and we'll 'discuss' it. BTW, Jord and I have been engaged since either August 7th (via the Internet) or September 27th, when he asked me in person. Take your pick . But I wouldn't hurt you, Gurm... much... I like you...

Heheheheheheheh...

Proto Alpha driver? If you are referring to the Matrox 490 driver it DOES NOT support direct3d and 2151 does NOT have g400 drivers in it.

Gurm I see... now are we talking registered Microsoft beta tester or Matrox?

GURM,

I have Windows 2000 RC2 running on (besides other things) a Pentium 133. I have Windows Millennium Beta 1 running on a 166MMX. Other than bootup times, the 133 is just as useable as the 166MMX.

About the only reason I can see for choosing Millennium over 2000 is wanting to run in 32M or less, 2000 really needs 64 or more.

Also, the blurb from MS when I joined the beta program was that the Millennium was intended to take advantage of the newer, faster systems available in a way that Win9X couldn't.

Zunik7:

Not the 490 driver. The proto alpha driver which isn't available unless you're a registered developer or beta tester. It has almost all of D3D implemented (missing some antialiasing and limited bump support, etc.) but no OpenGL. It is also DX7 compliant.

PaulS:

They may very well have tightened up Win2000 (I have JUST gotten around to installing RC2, I hadn't played with it since Beta2). Millennium DOES support some things in ways Win9x can't - ACPI, for example. It does "hibernate" mode just like Win2k. I think it's more a matter of approaching things from different ends. Win2k is NT with a whole lot more hardware support and gaming capability - but it's not a gaming platform. Millennium is Win9x with all the 16-bit stuff taken out, but it's still not a "professional" OS (no security, still a baby file system, etc. etc.) My prediction (and I could always be wrong, I suppose) is that when DX8 (and DX7/8 games) comes out we'll see that Millennium handles it better on a wider range of hardware than Win2k. But conversely, Win2k will always be better at things like running 3DS Max concurrently with several other apps.
