    Hi,

It is indeed possible that the card be defective... I am truly since i did not read all the replies and will be suggesting things you might have tried already... but better getting these twice then not at all... Here is what I would try :

    - Do you get the same thing in safe mode?
    - did you completely remove the Matrox drivers with the unsintall and remove all display listed in the device manager in safe mode and start fresh?
    - Once the new drivers isntalled, did you try disabling Bus Mastering in teh Matrox drivers?
    - how about if you put the graphic acceleration to none in the display properties - settings -advance - performance?
Have you tried removing all cards but the G400 and see if the problem persist?
    - have you tried updating the BIOS on your card?
    - how about trying the card in another system?
    - How about booting with no monitors connected to the computer and then conencting it once fully loaded in windows?

    Hope some of these helps...

    Z

Thank you very much to Zwisch and K4.

Regarding SbLive and G400 combo, I have no conflicts.

Now I can work only at 800x600x60hz.

If I increase either resolution or frequency, the monitor starts flashing (seems to lose frequency), especially when I insert an autoplay cd or I try to see the content of a floppy.
If I boot in safe mode everything is ok.

Maybe J.B. could help me: is this problem a known issue? Do defective cards behave this way?

      Please consider these two things:

1- I had no problem with G400 32 Mb DH
      2- Everytime I reinstalled, I reinstalled the O.S.

      It's really a frustrating situation.

Thanks again for the kind and great support you all are providing me

        To Zwisch:

The only thing I didn't try is to boot Windows without connecting monitor and the connect it.

If, acting this way, everything is ok, what should I conclude?

        Thanks again for your support.

        Daniele.

My first G400 32Mb DH OEM had the same problem. Lockups, screen-corruptions on the big scale, low resolutions @ 16bit only. I tried reflashing the BIOS several times, reinstalled Win98, reinstalled the drivers umpteen of times and finally sent it back to the reseller.

They sent me a new G400 and from that moment onwards I had no problems.

Although you could try this trick: Install a G200 (if you have one!), install the drivers, close down Windows and shut your machine off, remove the G200 and install the G400. Reboot in Windows safe mode and in device manager you'll see that the G200 is still installed, remove it and reboot your PC in a normal way.

If you still have screencorruptions and all, then yes, the card is broken, you should get a new one asap!!

            Hello!

First of all, thanks for the advice Jorden: I have not had the chance yet to find a G200 to make the suggested test.

I'm still waiting a new Max and/or replacing mobo.

In the meantime I have a question.

With the Vanilla plugged, SANDRA reports my bus frequency is set to 1x (67 mhz).
If I want 2x (134 Mhz) I have to force it through Win registry.

If I plug my (defective?) Max and re-install Windows, Sandra reports my bus frequency is set to 2x: I don't need to force it.

            Sandra also reports what follows:

            - AGP Bus Version: 1.00
            - AGP interface: 2.10
            - Graphic card AGP version: 2.00

Please consider my mobo is the new MS-6163 pro and I have latest Award Bios (W6163MJ, ver.3.1).

Sholud I suspect the problem lies in the mobo?

            Thanks again to everybody.

            Daniele.

              Hello to everyone!

It seems I can see the end of the tunnel so far.

I was still waiting another MAX (I don’t even know if it will ever come or I will ever need), when I noticed that my computer failed “instant” (I mean after 10-20 secs) re-booting after being switched off: to be able to re-boot I had to wait at least 3 minutes (sometimes more..).

My vendor has firstly replaced my mobo and…..no chance to have a proper re-boot. Then the sentence: you have a defective 128 Mb single RAM module! So he installed a 64 Mb single RAM module (he has run out of stock 128 Mb modules…..I’ll have to wait) and re-booting gave no problem, but, most outstanding issue, MY MONITOR HAS STOPPED FLASHING AND LOSING FREQUENCY WITH MAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!
I’ve been testing my system since last night, so I prefer not to sing the “victory song” yet.

Anyway I would really appreciate your expert comments on what follows:

If RAM module was defective, why didn’t I have any monitor related problem with Vanilla? Please consider that my troubles started when I upgraded to MAX! Do this two cards use RAM differently? Are these hypothesis feasible?

I realize my questions sound like “how will be weather in Italy on November in 10 years?” and I also realize that someone of you will say “how the h……. can we answer to your questions? We are too far from you and from your system!”

Thanks a lot for your kind attention.

              Bye!
              Daniele.

                Hello!

Two days of testing and everything has been working perfectly.

I am starting enjoying my MAX so far.

Anyway I would like to know what really caused all these troubles.....but I am afraid that only God knows.

Thanks again for the great and helpful support.

Glad to see that things seem to be working out so well. By the way, I've gone over this entire thread, and I for one really appreciate your tone: You've been patient, respectful, and appreciative. If everyone were this way things would be much better.

I hope your problem is solved for good. I've had strange experiences with bad RAM. Sometimes it's a bad area, sometimes only a single bit that will really mess things up. And you'll only notice that one bit behaving badly when everything lines up a certain way (drivers, settings, certain parts of astrology). It happens sometimes, and it's incredibly frustrating when it does.

                  Good luck,
