  • All right, so how do you move IRQ's around?

I'm the guy with the comp that hangs every minute or so... and i also had 4 devices on IRQ 11... so i was wondering how to go about moving at least 2 of them? Here's a list of my IRQ's again:

    0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
    2 Programmable interrupt controller
    3 (free)
    4 Communications Port (COM1)
    5 (free)
    6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
    7 ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
    8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
10 Promise Technology Inc. Ultra66 IDE Controller
10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
    11 Matrox Millennium G400 - English
    11 U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Win
11 Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64D
11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
    12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
    13 Numeric data processor
    14 (free)
15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

Thanks for your guys' input... i'm going to get the latest drivers for my Promise Ultra66 and see what happens. Thanks again guys.

I'm not sure, but you should leave the first PCI slot (the one next to AGP) free, if possible.

There are FAQ's on Matrox web site on how to resolve IRQ conflicts. You should visit them.

Oh Boy!!! Free Beer on IRQ 11!!!...Heheheheh

Depending on the brand of mother board you have. You should be able to do this fairly painlessly

Go to the PNP/PCI Config section of your Bios

        PNP/PCI Configuraion
        ********************
        PNP OS Installed.......: No
        Force Update ESCD......: Disable
        Resources Controlled By: Auto
        Assign IRQ For VGA.....: Enable
Assign IRQ for USB.....: Enable- only if your using USB Devices
PIRQ-1 Use IRQ No......: 14This should put the G400 on IRQ 14
        PIRQ-2 Use IRQ No......: Auto
        PIRQ-3 Use IRQ No......: Auto
        PIRQ-4 Use IRQ No......: Auto

Let's start with this change and then get back to us with the new IRQ assignments. Then it's just a matter of whether the SB Live will share with the modem.

You're not going to believe this, but there is NOTHING like that in my BIOS!!
There is a section that lets me disable or enable the IRQ's from number's 3-6, 8-11...
But i KNOW i don't want to disable any of them, right? That's the LAST thing i'd probably want to do.

To answer Maggi's comment, yes there is a space between the first PCi slot and the AGP the G400 is on. I have 5 PCI's with 2 of them being used... and 1 AGP being used by the G400 of course.

I think i know why my BIOS doesn't have the PNP/PCI config... it's because my computer is from Gateway. That's probably the main reason...

May I ask, McRhea, why aren't you using the primary IDE controller (IRQ 14) ?? Yet you do use the secondary IDE Controller (IRQ 15), right?

What's on that one then? Why not use the Promise Ultra66 for both the IDE ports?

That's because he is using the ATA/66 controller for his Hard drive. You have to disable the primary IDE Master cause he's not using it.

                Okay,

But why not use both IDE controllers on the Promise then?

"Ultra66 is completely backward compatible with UDMA/33 drives, EIDE, Fast ATA-2, or ATAPI devices."

In case of any older hardware being connected.

Although I don't think this is right then:
"It frees up your motherboard's ports to connect more IDE devices."

Not if you have to disable IDE port 1.
But okay, that's how I see it.

McRhea, have you tried running all your drives from off the Promise only?

                  Confirmation Jorden!!

                  McRhea:

My guess is that your odd configuration of HDD's is the root problem. I have a Promise on a SS7 system, and what I found worked for me was to occupy each IDE channel (both onboard, and on the Promise) with a device...Now I've got 4 master devices with no slaves, and all my little devices seem to be getting along fine with each other. Promise has several FAQ's dealing with the issue of an open onboard IDE channel--it can be problematical in some setups. How many IDE devices do you have, and how are they cabled?

Ok guys, He has one hard drive in his system and that's not what the issue is here!!

He needs to get his G400 on it's own IRQ.

Hey McRhea, list what slots your cards are in. Looks like we'll have to move cards around to free up IRQ 11.

                      ALPBM:

McRhea has several threads running, all of which began with his display temporarily "hanging" every 50-60 seconds. Yeah, he needs the dedicated IRQ, I agree, but he's also got a Promise Ultra 66 card that is a part of the problem. I've got a Promise, and their S.M.A.R.T. driver has a bug. He needs to get that Primary Onboard IDE occupied or fully disabled. The Promise driver Polls his system doing diagnostics on the HDD which is probably causing the hang.

Pauly, I read his other thread as well... so please bear with me, and tell me: what if for once it isn't a problem with the G400 sharing IRQs with those other cards...

The SB PCI64 isn't a powercard, nor is the modem. Okay, one of them, preferably the modem, should be diverted to IRQ#3, COM2 or COM4. The darn thing about it is: It's a Winmodem... (as I read it)
The SB PCI64 could go to IRQ#5, as that's free and not used by the SB16 emulator.

Even if we free up these two cards, would his problems be over then?? What if it's a problem with the IDE-ports?? I've seen systems hang completely in the same way because either IDE-port was disabled...

                        Jorden.

I was just trying to stick to the thread Topic, which was moving his IRQs. You guys are already dealing with the Promise Controller on the other Thread.

Don't overlook the simple stupid stuff.
I had the same problem about a year ago..finally after about a week of swapping cards, tracked it down to a bad Western Dig. IDE hard drive. Even the WD diagnostic showed it bad.
                              Bought a new drive...same problem.
I was a short in the 99 cent AC connector to the hard drive. Only good thing to come out of that is I had an excuse to buy an extra drive.
