    > Just wait until the 17th of February. Matrox are going to have absolutely perfect drivers by then because so far they have been able to identify and fix every problem without releasing any more public betas. <

    PaulS,

Your profile says you are a software developer. If so you should know better than to make blanket statements like the one above.

No software is EVER perfect. Saying software will be released by an arbitrary date is dicey at best (Feb 17th is MS's Win2k "release" date, right?). And finally, "identify and fix every problem"? No way in hell. That reminds me of the doublespeak I heard from some other bug fix release stating that "version x.y includes all known bug fixes".

Sorry, attempted sarcasm. I was having a shot at Matrox for not broadening the beta program. Of course they won't have perfect drivers come 17th Feb, but a public beta program that is more than just a marketing tool would improve their chances.

Yes, and i know that W2K is gold, but i just have this funny feeling that shit will happen to microsoft again; like the DOJ preventing the release, or something like that.

        One can only dream though.

          hi again!
For any one who doesn't know I'm not using any beta/build/evaluation Win2000. What I'm using is full OEM w2k pro.
Regarding g400/w2k and stability, I didn't have chance to check it on any games. BTW I have only UT and NFS4. However, as I said, those drivers (or lack of them) are really pissing me off. I understand all of you hot headed matrox fan (I'm one of them). However, matrox can really piss me and I suppose not only me but anyone on that forum, so sametime we can camplain!!! and this is true, isn't it??? They is only way out. JUST WAIT TILL 17th feb.

Dude, if it really pisses you off so badly then why dont you go lay down and watch TV for a while? And yes you can complain, but go here http://www.matrox.com if you wanna complain. You got the wrong website for complaints.

mlody: Think you'll find you're not that l33t to have Win2K Pro (build 2195, final) this early. I have been running it for nearly two weeks with Matrox' "buggy" drivers.

What bugs? You weren't specific. I haven't found ANY.

                    Win2K Pro (final)
                    Asus K7M + K7-600
                    Marvel G400
                    etc.

You *did* mention a lack of features, as support for your rant, but failed to fill us in on the buggy part.

The funnier part is that you are bitching still THREE WEEKS before Win2K goes final. Matrox should be busting their ass for the few that have it in advance?

Midol and Pamprin are in aisle 7, son.

To all you twits that keep going on about how great Matrox's Win2k support is compared to nVidia. Remember that nVidia doesn't produce video cards, only chips, and technical support comes directly from the card manufacturer. So, when nVidia develop drivers, they are passed (with source) to the companies that manufacture the cards. These companies then test and tweak the drivers and send feedback to nVidia. Finally, when the manufacturers are happy with the driver, nVidia will release a "reference" version of the driver, and manufacturers release their stylised versions.
nVidia won't release beta drivers because of the potential support burden it could place on their chip customers, but the companies that manufacture the cards can (if they want). And some have.
Anyway, the bottom line is that there are a lot of people testing nVidia drivers, many of them specialist video card driver developers, in that sense, the drivers are almost "open source". If you buy a nVidia card from a quality manufacturer, chances are you are going to have fast, stable drivers come 17th of Feb (probably a bit earlier).
If you have a Matrox card, then you have some reason to be worried. The NT track record is not that great, especially in video and 3D, and we have had only one public beta of any significance. There aren't anywhere near the number of developers testing the drivers and privy to the source that nVidia have.
Now maybe a lot of people posting in this forum are on the Matrox beta program and are happy with how the drivers are progressing. That is great, but please don't expect that everyone should take your word on it. NT is complex, there are many permutations (anyone tried a dx7 app in a terminal session running from a quad box yet?) and without the broad developer base that companies like nVidia have, I am skeptical that they can pull this off without a public beta program.

                      Paul.

                      edited for typos

HOLY WORDS PaulS. I'm not gonna comment that any more. It's not worth it. Thanks guys for your feedback and comments. I noticed that some of you could fight for matrox. I hope and I wish them the best because I was just kidding with that geforce. I'll will stick with matorox forever, if they keep it alive and worth using (I hope)
                        Thanks

Please remember a couple of things about win2k.

First it might be full released OEM, but if you have that OS on an OEM system, your system should be complete with their parts and should not come with matrox cards. If you have one, it's either that you hacked the OS or changed cards... this is still not retail.

Once the full OS will be sold retail, then yes drivers will be made available.

A lot of you actually thinks that upgrading to win 2000 will be just the best thing ever and that this will be stable as NT with the gaming power of win98...well don't dream. Win2000 is simply NT5 and not a win98 enhancements. Most games will not run on it properly, even with the best drivers out there. This OS is made, and clearly stated, as a commercial or business OS, just like NT 4. This is NOT a gaming platform and all cards will not give you the same compatiblity and performance as win98.

So those who think that there will be perfect OGL and D3D under this OS are dreaming BIG time. Dual boot if you want a gaming platform. I find that the beta drivers are nice at this time, if you don't play all your games on it.

just my two cents. No need trying to flame me on this as I do not care. I am simply tired of this eternal whinning when some think that this OS is the greatest achivement on earth. It's just an NT4 upgrade, it is clearly marketted as a commercial OS. The gamming platform (win 98 upg) is still in beta and will only be realease much later this year.

                            Ben

But, if you're like me, i had no choice but to upgrade to Win2k. I run a dual-processor multimonitor system. Win98 can't handle dual-processors.

Almost makes me wonder why you would opt for SMP if you know there's no decent support for it.

                                Almost.
