  • 3D acceleration doesn't like me at all...

I am working on the following system:
    Athlon 550,
    MSI 6167,
    128 MB RAM,
    Matrox G400 32MB SH,
    (DirectX 7.0a, PowerDesk 5.41.008, Win98).

*And* I have the following problem:
If I want to run anything OpenGL-related like UT, Q2 or the likes, I get a picture, but it is completely flawed. The colors (especially in connection with lights) change all the time.
With Direct3D, there is a similar problem: UT works fine this time, but the MS FS98 only display scrambled textures, flickers and is completely *mad*.

I already tried to reinstall all drivers: PowerDesk, TurboGL (yes, I know, the new OpenGL drivers are better than the last TurboGL ones...), the AMD AGP miniport driver, DirectX, simply everything.

Right now, I have no idea what to do next. I mean, I don't OC the card, I don't OC the CPU, nothing. HELP :-(!

is the G400 sharing an IRQ with anything besides PCI steering ?

      Good question. Good hint.
I'll try to find out as soon as I get home.
      Thanks.

Also what sound card, IRQ, and drivers?

A full IRQ list probably wouldn't hurt.

        What other components are installed?

My IRQ list is the following:

00 (how do you translate "Systemzeitgeber"?)
          01 Keyboard
          02 INT Controller
          03 COM2
          04 COM1
          06 Floppy
          07 ECP LPT1
          08 RTC
          09 USB Open-Host-Ctrl.
09 IRQ Holder for PCI steering
          09 G400
10 IRQ Holder for PCI steering
          10 SB AudioPCI 128
          11 Hauppauge Win/TV (Audio)
11 IRQ Holder for PCI steering
          11 Hauppauge Win/TV (Video)
          12 PS/2 Mouse Port
          13 NumCoPro
          14 EIDE Ctrl.
          14 prim. Bus Master Ctrl.
          15 EIDE Ctrl.
          15 sec. Bus Master Ctrl.

Oh. As I am pinning this down, I am noticing that there is this infamous USB Ctrl. on IRQ 09. I'll try and kick this one.

          Till next time...

11 Hauppauge Win/TV (Audio) ?? Which card are you using?
Usb open host controller could be the culprit. Are you using the usb if not disable it in the bios and windoze and see what happens.

It's a Hauppauge Win/TV primio (w/RC). It consists of two parts, obviously: A video and an audio part - which does nothing more than looping through the line-in-connection :-(.

Now: Killing this USB Controller thing didn't help anything.
                I out of choices.
I'll have to shoot Windows and respawn it.

                BTW: Some more questions:
                - What driver version would be best for AMD chipsets? Some people told me that only 5.30 would be stable. Obviously, 5.41 isn't performing well for me. How about 5.50?
                - How does TurboGL work? Does it jump to life when one selects "Standard OpenGL" in a game's video options?
                - What is the AGP miniport driver good for, exactly?

                Thank you very much...

AGP miniport INSTALL IT basically it upgrades 98's crappy support for AGP and gives you AMD's performance and compatibility.

I have an Athlon system also, except my motherboard is a GA-7IX. My video card is a Matrox G400 max DH. Just wanted to let you know that Powerdesk 5.41 has been working fine for me. The drivers that came with my video card worked just fine also. If you end up doing a clean install of Windows, be sure you install the miniport driver BEFORE you install your video card driver. Also, disable all the integrated devices you don't actually use in your BIOS, such as USB and COM2. And finally, be sure your video card is set to AGP in the BIOS, and the apature is set to 256MB. Along with the Gigabyte, I know the MSI-6167 is one of the most stable Athlon boards, so I don't think it's the problem. Maybe some time you can download WCPUID from http://www.h-oda.com and see what kind of AGP transfer rates you're getting (1x or 2x). If you only get 1x, you may also try to use the registry hack to force 2x. I hope this helps!

                        Thanks for all your help.
However, all this disabling of unused devices didn't help. And yes, my Miniport Driver *is* installed :-).
And I am getting AGPx2. And aperture is set to 256M.
                        <sigh>

                        Let's face it: format c: /u.

Theres a bit of satisfaction of killing his billiness though.
Ver 5.50 is a beta and one or two poeple are having probs with these.
I've got a win/tv hummpy card with nicam stero and fm. It just doesn't have the win/tv audio hence my curosity.
At least you'll know you've got a clean system without any crus floating about.
