------------------------------------------

is there such a thing as an ISA Winmodem?

-------------------------------------------

Yes there are. And don't get Kruzin started on discribing it, or his experiances with it. It's not pretty!!!

I don't have an "Assign IRQ to VGA" option

Is this possible?? Don't all SS7 boards--in fact pretty much all
boards still available now--have this option in BIOS?

Or do I just get too many Award BIOSes?
As far as I know, Holly, none of the Award BIOSes have this option... only the Phoenix BIOSes...

What Award BIOSes do have is the option to put AGP before PCI detection !!

My Award bios has that option, although only since the last version.

Why would you get rid of the ISA cards, Ad B? All I have in my PC (Asus P2B with P3-450) are an ISA modem and ISA soundcard and my AGP G400.

Do you think that by upgrading your cards to PCI, you'll get rid of the problems you have?

Last time you thought so, you were upgrading to Win2k, and what's your trouble now?

I'm sorry, but I don't think you're very ready for a PC.

Ummm...guys?

Now I know I've been 'wrong' at least once today (guess I wasn't paying attention; finally saw one of those falcons living on the Brooklyn Bridge out my window)...

<SOMEbody's in a bad mood... what help is it to tell AdB he's not ready for a PC, even if true?>... and I know we've been through this before with AdB.....

....but might it not help to ask what the "problems" he's having actually consist of??

If you look back, we have no description of the symptoms whatsoever....I guess you are all assuming that they're the same?

But what if they aren't?

Just a concept.

OK, Ad B. Tell us what your problems are.

(Darn. I thought Tim and Jorden would manage another tag-team tech-support-o-rama without even knowing what was wrong.)

Hey Paulcs:

Bite me! (You know we love you, right?)

For the record...much like McRhea (Oh! God!) the problems began two threads back. As I recall, lockups and bombouts on several of these GAMES you people insist on subjecting your computers to. Click on the link in Jord's post above and you'll get an inkling.

So what's the story Ad? Bless us with knowledge of your SPECIFIC issues, now that you've installed a completely new OS before getting your hardware straight. *sigh*

I get a black screen when exiting Q3A, plus 3dmark2k freezes after or in the first test.

Well, that was certainly informative, Ad B... but now I have another question.

I've actually gone back and read all your previous threads.

After we managed to convince you you had a MAX, you posted with the same problems you have now (Q3 crashing, 3D Mark crashing).

In the thread that Jord's post above links to, you decided to install Win2K in an effort to solve these problems.

At the end of that thread, having done so, you posted this:
Ad B
mini MURCer

posted 04 February 2000 21:33

Well, Windows 2000 is installed. It's nice, but thats not the point.
All the problems are solved but the screensaver ones.
So what did you do between 4-Feb. (when everything was supposedly fine and dandy) and 13-Feb. (when you showed up with the same problem again)?

Perhaps you have a software conflict with your OGL apps...some background program perhaps?

And I'm also mildly curious about Power Management being on IRQ9 of all places....

But the thing that occurs to me is.... I'm just thinking out loud so follow me and fill in the areas I'm less knowledgeable about (kinda all of 'em )

...Don't most OGL apps kinda screw around with your resolution in order to run? I know that I usually go to a black screen when running something like Q2, and then my desktop appears briefly but at 640*480*16bpp, then the game's splash screen comes up, or the demo or whatever and the game runs in the resolution you've set for it. Sometimes if the game crashes out, it can't revert the desktop, and I have to reboot to get back to 1024*768.

Like I said, my knowledge is too full of holes to propose a coherent theory, but if Q3 does something like that (internal resolution change)... and I assume 3DMark is changing resolutions in order to benchmark the video card.... if for some reason they were unable to reliably grab whatever resource they use to do that, wouldn't they lock or crash?

I hope this is clear enough for someone who knows more than I do to get what I mean and say if this is a valid trail or not....

-----------------------------

I've been trying to find newer AGP drivers at ali, but there are none for win2k.

Oh Really??

No Drivers from ALI??? Hmmm.

Win2K's release date is what??? Hmmmm.

Win2K is an operating system designed for what? Hmmmmm.

You have a 3 Generations old proc. on an early SS7 and are O/Cing the S**t out of a unit whose history is that they don't O/C very well. Hmmmm.

But it's the G400 you're having problems with.

Ohhhhh Yeahhhhhh!

Hey, you know that Q3 thing sounds an awful lot like the error people were getting on exiting HL... which does use the Quake (2) engine, doesn't it?

Wouldn't it just be too hysterically funny if all he'd needed is to upgrade his drivers to the newest betas?

LOL!!!
