  • Problem with G400

After restart computer gives me following message:
    While initializing deivce IOS:
ERROR: Real mode system memory allocation failed

After a while of manipulating under safe mode it was clear
that problem was with G400. Installed some old ATI card (sorry)
and it worked. As long as G400 is inside the same error message
    keeps reappearing.
Tried reinstalling drivers and overwriting BIOS according to procedures - no
    change.

    Can anyone help?

    L.T.

Well there, LT! It's obvious from the List that the drivers for your G400 can't load because there's no IRQ assigned to the card. Ahem! This isn't an ATI card Buddy! You should check the motherboard's BIOS for settings like "PnP OS" (set it to YES) and "Assign IRQ to VGA" (also set to yes). Your G400 should take an IRQ between 9-11. This will probably also result in Winblows redetecting the video card again on the reboot. It's best to cancel at that point. Let it install it's PCI VGA drivers. Then get a copy of the latest Matrox drivers and run the setup.exe you find in the directory they unpacked into.

If the Registry continues to appear to be completely hosed. You will need to reinstall Winblows (that not the same as a "clean install"). It's just that there may be other corruption introduced by whatever program you installed. Or it could possibly be a virus, though that far less likely. Good Luck!!

LT, Also make sure that the G400 isn't Sharing with the SB Live!, this is a known issue, these 2 do not share together... Not sure if the G400 shares with anyone, but I know for sure not with SB Live...

to change what the SB Live is at just move it one slot up or down, this usually does the trick, or if you have the option in the bios Re-assign the IRQ associated with where the SB Live is....

BTW, the PCI slot right under the AGP slot usually shares the same IRQ as the AGP slot... Usually, these things vary, so trial and error is required

The G400 will not share an IRQ. Just like Nvidia-based cards, it craves an IRQ of its own

Problem solved. Thanks everyone for taking time to help me!
The problem wasn't with IRQs but with the
damned winblos registry. Obviously it was
              totally screwed.
So do u think it let me reinstall itself?
Why make life so simple? Three attempts to
reinstall win98 resulted in crashes. And since I have upgrade version of 98 - yeah,
you guessed it right - for clean install
I needed to... install win95 back on! It
was very traumatic. On the bright side -
G400 was fine. Sooo after installing 98 ontop of 95 the almost annual 5 hour win-o-palooza was over! I finished late into the night, heavily bleeding, mainly from my ass (don't
let the name micro-soft fool you! if you know what I mean.....)
Now only internet explorer crashes on me every other time. Haven't yet figured out why...

              Cheers
              L.T.
