that restriction was only dfor the 99 versions of 3D Mark, Mark ...

the new restrictions are no results browser, no batch runs and I think no cusomization of the single tests or something.

When you compare the colordepths, have a close look on the texture rendering results ...

        Thanx a bunch !!!

        Now the interesting part:

        16bpp
        Game 1 - Helicopter - Low Detail 141.0 FPS
        Game 1 - Helicopter - Medium Detail 101.8 FPS
        Game 1 - Helicopter - High Detail 53.2 FPS
        Game 2 - Adventure - Low Detail 156.8 FPS
        Game 2 - Adventure - Medium Detail 79.1 FPS
        Game 2 - Adventure - High Detail 46.4 FPS
        32bpp
        Game 1 - Helicopter - Low Detail 102.5 FPS
        Game 1 - Helicopter - Medium Detail 74.9 FPS
        Game 1 - Helicopter - High Detail 38.4 FPS
        Game 2 - Adventure - Low Detail 100.9 FPS
        Game 2 - Adventure - Medium Detail 70.2 FPS
        Game 2 - Adventure - High Detail 44.1 FPS

... seems to be logical ... 16bpp is faster than 32bpp

same applies to most of the other tests too

        BUT

        16bpp
64MB Texture Rendering Speed 104.6 FPS
        32bpp
64MB Texture Rendering Speed 176.8 FPS

        WTF is that ???
I guess the drivers are not yet optimzied for AGP transfers in 16bpp ... dunno ... starnge result, ain't it ?

Also notice what a tremendous performance hit you get in the fillrate tests ...

        16bpp
        Fill Rate (Single-Texturing) 634.3 MTexels/s
        Fill Rate (Multi-Texturing) 1305.2 MTexels/s
        32bpp
        Fill Rate (Single-Texturing) 304.8 MTexels/s
        Fill Rate (Multi-Texturing) 627.8 MTexels/s

cuts it roughly in half when switching from high color to true color ...

Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't wanna bash your new card - and I'm pretty sure that I can't do that anyway - but I saw comparable results in another forum, found it quite interesting and wanted to check whether that was a unique or general problem.

        Cheers,
        Maggi

Well...Uhmmm..you see..it's kind of like this-

There were a few changes made between the 16bit and 32bit test. I upgraded to the 5.22 drivers and set AGP apriture from 64MB to 256MB. Might have something to do with the unusuall FPS diference. But. double the bit rate and half the fill rate seams about right.

Not very good test methodology I admit, but I'm not reviewing for any creditable site. Though I think Doctor Tom, might exept them .

it's not only that driver update ...

I saw those kinda scores from one set off drivers, so I guess NVidia hasn't settled 16bpp as top priority.

Your GAS change only affects those score if you have a 32 megger and probably not even then (32MB onboard + 64MB AGP - 6.75MB triple frame buffer = 89.25 MB texture memory)

About the fillrate ... I thought the GF2 would also use interanl 32bit rendering until the output would be dithered down to 16bpp, hence I thought it must have been closer, don't know exactly though.

And Tom would love your comparison ...

            Cheers & thanx again,
            Maggi

Little something else to sink your teeth into.
I re-ran the default test, with the new set up 5.22 drivers and AGP app. at 256.

The Texture rendering numbers are a little closer together now. Not sure what happened to the Bump Mapping numbers . Oh well you take the good with the bad.

this is really weird, Mark ...

but before I get deeper, I'd like to thank you for your tremendous cooperation !

I know how time consuming those test runs can get, but I guess you'ee also kind of a techie nut that likes to dig out those tiny differences ...

If you'd like you could extend that another time and use PowerStrip for a readout of your texture memory with both GAS settings. On my system it seems to be able to assign half of the amount of my GAS settings, i.e. @ 256MB my texture memory is extended by 128MB giving me a rough total of 144MB DirectX memory. This should be the reason why your 16bit 64MB scores went up close to 32bpp scores and seems to be ok then.

Somebody at 3Dfiles forum said this memory mapping would be related to drivers and his NVidia would see all of the GAS ...

Oh and thanx a bunch for leading Borg to the right direction !
It seems that my thread is grown a little and I better head over to see what's up ...

                            Cheers,
