• My G400 Max Sucks!!!

I have a G400Max and it sucks!!!

Problem No 1.
I had my G400Max in a Chaintech 6BTA2 with a 433MHz Celeron, but the boot up reported I had a 416 and now with a Gigabyte BX2000+ and a PIII-750, the boot up reports that I have a PIII-706!

Problem No 2.
I cannot get bus mastering to work with any OS other than Win95OSR2. I have tried two lots of BIOS and all drivers from 5.20 to 5.52.

Problem No. 3 (The most annoying!!)
If I install anything that effects the video, (Realplayer for example) the next time I boot the PC, the machine hangs at the point where the backdrop would 1st appear. The screen goes blank and flashing underline sits in the top left corner and thats it. I then hit the reset and the machine reboots. this time I get to the backdrop, but the screen is set to 640x480, 16 colours. A windows box appears telling me that the video settings are not compatible with my card. Hit OK and the Video properties box appears. The screen res is set to 1280x1024, 32bit colour, the only bit wrong is the font is set to small. I set the font to large and hit OK. The PC does a soft reboot and all is fine until I switch off and on again, then the same problem occurs. I have tried removing the card and letting windows re-detect it, reinstall drivers, DirectX etc, no effect. Does anyone know where this info is stored? as I have to re-load from a Ghost image to get rid of this.

Don't even ask me about the Dual Head!!! I have totally given up on that an brought a real-magic MPEG-2 card.

I am getting sick of this card. I am thinking of junking it and getting a VooDoo 5/5500.

It anyone has read this far, many thanks.

Do you have a jumper or switch for the FSB/AGP ratio ?

At 100MHz FSB it must be set to 2/3 which is usually done automatically, but some MoBos require it to be set manually.

Besides that I recommend PD6.x and also make sure you don't have any IRQ conflicts on your G400.

One question left:
Does using your G400 cause the CPU MHz to drop ???
This would be really unique, as the gfx card has nothing to do with FSB settings and the according CPU speeds.

PS: I suppose your comment to the latest .ini files form MS, you are not refering to Intel's chipset drivers ??? http://developer.intel.com/design/so...nfinst_enu.htm

Thanks for the reply.

I will check the FSB/AGP ratio.
I have put a scope on the CPU/FSB clock and it is running at the right speed. Its just the MB BIOS reporting the wrong freq. It seems as though the M/B thinks the FSB is 62MHz at 66MHz and 94(ish) at 100MHz.

I will download and try the new PD6.X drivers.

I will download the infinst_enu.zip file. What does this do??

Many many thanks

If I was you I would fix that short between the floor and the keyboard before doing anything else.

My system is:-
Gigabyte GA-BX2000+ M/B
PIII-750 (100MHz FSB)
2 x 128MByte PC133
2 x 30.1GByte Maxtor 7200rpm ATA66
G400Max in AGP
Win95OSR2 with latest .ini file from Microsoft.
Compaq P110 monitor

Old system was a Chaintech 6BTA2 with a 466 Celeron, and a 9017E Idex monitor, but it had the same problems.

With Win98 and Win98SE, if the Bus Mastering is disabled then the card works. (Much reduced FPS). When Bus mastering is enabled, the screen slowly corrupts then the machine hangs. Bus Mastering has no effect on the "Hangs just before 1st desktop" problem. (See problem 3 from 1st post). I am currently running the lasted video card BIOS and the 5.52 drivers.

If I un-install the matrox software and then re-install it (With a reboot in between), all the properties are reloaded. (I dont need to re-enter the size, no. of colours, font size, etc) This infomation must be stored somewhere. My problem 3 must be due to this file getting corrupted or a file it calls up getting corrupted or replaced.

I am not having a rant for rants sake. I have been very happy with all of my previous Matrox cards (Mill1, Mill2, G200)

The problem with the Bus Mastering MUST be software. The hardware does change between Win95OSR2 and WIN98SE yet it stops working. The problem could be Micro$ft or Matrox but how can I find out.

Many thanks for any assistance

Here's what occurs to me:
• Did you install your monitor, or is it listed in the Control Panel as "Plug and Play Monitor"?

If there are no drivers for your particular monitor, you can make it "Standard VGA (higest rez your monitor can take)".

The fact that your video display is acting like it's in Safe Mode, even when you are not, implies that your vidcard drivers are improperly installed, and possibly Windows itself.
• Did you uninstall PD using the uninstaller and then install whatever PD you're now using?
• And when you changed mobos, did you just move the HDDs you were already using to the new system, or did you reformat and install Windows clean? I had problems for weeks when I moved an installed HDD to a new system....
• Check your ACPI settings in BIOS, and your System Devices in the Device Manager in Safe Mode. You may have doubling, and you may have a problem with ACPI/APM-- those were the devices that gave me the most trouble.
• Have you checked your IRQs?

I personally would look to the motherboard first. If it is not reporting the CPU properly who's to say that anything else will work right. It could just be that you need a motherboard BIOS update.
