  • DivX movie not passed through TV-out

    Hi,
i noticed that some DivX movies cannot be played through TV-out. I can't watch The bone collecter because it's encoded at 720x365. Why is that. And how can i fix it so i can watch the movie on TV.
I played The sixth sense a few weeks ago and that went great(640x360).

yeah..me too.. i think if it doesnt have the right ratio it wont go out the tv.. stuart little wont too..

so what i do is choose dual head multi display(then play the movie on the tv and maximize the player) or choose clone(then maximize the player) so you can play it full screen on your tv

      Hi guys,

Just curious, what actually is a DivX movie? I suspect it's something you get in the US, here in the UK, I've never heard of it!

What do you want a signature for?

What we've noticed in tech supp is that if the 1st value of the video res is not a multiple of 32, it won't output. However, this does not happen all the time in house. For some reason, clips that are not multiple's of 32 will sometimes output and sometimes won't.

Clips that are multiple of 32 will allways output.

This is something we are looking into but haven't had any luck in reproducing it all the time.

PS: It doesn't have anything to do with the DivX codec.

DivX was a (thankfully) short lived competitor to DVD Video - basically it used a much higher compression with much tighter copy protection. And you didn't purchase the movie when you bought the DivX disc - it was sort of a "pay per view" set up with an option to buy unlimited viewing rights for a disc (but only on a player with your account card in it). They recently shut it down because of hugh financial loss. The codec is still in use - some video hackers use it for making CDVs from DVD. It still sucks.

LOL, haven't heard taht much nonsense for a long time!

DivX codec has NOTHING to do with the DivX video-stuff you could rent. DivX codec is MS' reversed engineerd MPEG-4 codec, with added MP3 stream support for sound. If encoded right, you can get MUCH higher quality than VCD (MPEG-1), in the same space. So if you encode movies such as The Matrix from DVD into 2cd's in DivX format, you get qulity between VCD and DVD... it really rocks! (the only problem was playback on other OS'es than windows I thought)

Cheers Anid, I do recall that talks were underway over here in the UK to develop this type of disc, but it all dissappeared, and luckly it seems that unlike you guys in the US we got DVD plain and simple.

                Haig,

so you guys in tech supp noticed it too. Can and will it be fixed in the near future? Or does Matrox say that DivX is mostly used for "illegal" copies so they don't care and ignore the problem?

But when the problem is fixed, how will i know?

can u answer some or all of my questions?

                tnx, Henry

                  Hi Henry,

This codec will sometimes use overlay to playback the clip and sometimes it will blit the video info onto the screen. When it blits, it will not work with DVD max becuase it needs overlay to output.

We do not know why this codec is behaving this way. Tech supp has reported this problem but I don't think it is considered as a high priority bug let alone being a bug with our drivers.

Haig: I saw someone else mention (on another message board) that he thought it had something to do with the different output modes that .avis could be created in. Seems that the Matrox video drivers don't always create an overlay surface, depending upon what type of avi it is.

Specifically, it seems like it might be an issue with displaying YUY2 versus RGB24 .avis (I believe DVDs are RGB, right? And that's why they will display in 720xXXX mode, but .avis will not?)

You probably know better than I do, but I was under the impression that it was a problem with the Matrox drivers--not media player, Windows, or the codec--Nvidia cards, I've heard, work fine for any dimensions of the video.

I'd test it myself and find out, but my #$#$ TV/Out isn't working at the moment, damnit.

You're referring to the video res being a multiple of 32. At first, it did look like this was the problem but if you have a 5 minute clip playing (720x X), it'll output without problems. If it's longer than 5 minutes, it won't output becuase the clip all of a sudden blits the video info rather than continuing to use overlay.

Our dvdmax only outputs overlay data. We do not know why this is happening only with this codec. All other codecs including the new RB8 beta from Real has no problems.

                        Haig,

Your theory regarding the multiple of 32 seems to be right. As soon as I cropped a DIvx movie from 720x432 to 704x432 it diplayed fine on the TV using dvdmax.
This same clip would not play at all previosuly on the tvout even after i reduced it to less than 5 mins.

I used virtualdub to resize/crop divx files. It can be found at http://www.geocities.com/virtualdub/

Can you tell stupid people like me when, after I've installed and started virtualdub, how to crop the opened movie file?
