  • G400, MVP3 and .... you guessed it! QuakeIII

    Hi there!
If i may bug you guys for a quick question that
you probably all have the ansewr to:
    I sold my G400 to a freind who has a FIC503+
with a MVP3 chipset. With the card, i gave
him a bured CD with all the SAME drivers
i used for my Via based mobo, a K7V from Asus
    that is at Bios 1007.

    So, i used G400 driver 6.10, 4in1 4.25 and
DX7.0a. I know that DX wont influence openGL
    but just in case.

So the problem is that on my system, i used
    4in1 4.24, then installed DX7,0a and G400 6.10.
It went as expected, all went well and i was
playing QuakeIII in about 5 min!
But, on my freinds MVP3 system, i am not so
lucky. I always get a "assuming no openGL
ICD is installed", after a long list of messages.

I am puzzeled by this as everything is
spec... Please note that he had 5.53
    installed with a G200 but i uninstalled
    everything before installing 6.10.

    Thanx for any responce!

Ok, I'll say what I think Gurm was thinking. Get a real motherboard. The FIC503+ is a POS.

So, none has been able to make a G400 work
          on a 503+...
He had a G200 for a year without problems...

What would be a good SS7 mobo then...

          P5A?

Do a search for 503+ and my name, you will find numerous times I have posted my instructions. I will check later to see if you found it, I don't have time to post it right now.

What Rags said. You will find the correct order to do stuff in. I have G400 working in FIC VA503+ at my brother's house. There are no good SS7 boards, they are all POS. Du-ron Du-ron. In other words, get the thing working in VA503+ rather than waste money on a "new" SS7 board

Sorry. I couldn't remember who had done up the instructions on the VIA SS7 boards. Thanks, Rags!

But in general you will never have an end to the nightmare of a MVP3 board. Spend a couple hundred now and upgrade while you are still in the installation phase. Heh.

I've never had a problem with my MAX on Epox SS7 boards (had it on a MVP3G-M and MVP3G2). I've heard the FIC 503+ does have some big problems. Check what rev the board is. I think there is a "new" rev that fixes some agp problems that was released about a year and a half ago, so if the board is from before late 1998 it may be the one with problems.

"Download the new G400 drivers (which you have already =) ), download the 4in1 driver pack from Via, download the uninstall utility from Matrox, run the uninstall utility, reboot switch
to standard Vga adapter and reboot, install the 4in1 driver pack (don't install the IRQ miniport) in normal mode reboot and go into your bios and disable "read around write" save
settings and exit, boot into windows and run the setup for PD 5.30, reboot and you should be up to speed."

I will try that but 5.30 is one year old...

Can i do the same with Via's 4.24 and PD6.10?
I guess i will check also the bios settings
and to set everything a AGP1X...

                    Thanx!

Nonsense. While the MVP3 isn't the best chipset ever produced, it does the job. I've seen many more problems with those Athlon chipsets than I've ever had with my Epox board.

Nevertheless, I think my next chipset won't be from VIA (or ali or sis)...

                        So what then? i810? i815? i850 with
                        a P4 @ way to much $$$$$$$?

Right now, the best PIII board is one
with a Via Apollo Pro with 133MHz bus...

Intel sucks real bad plus they baclmailed
all chipset manufacturers that did Athlon boards...
Now there is an alternative and its KX/KT133.

My systems works with UDMA66, AGP4x, Busmaster,
                        USB enabled, etc,etc...

                        It is an ASUS though...

And like i said, i took me 5 min to
install a G400 and play quake!

True that this argument says that MVP3
                          is actually crap...

AMD did work closely with Via on Athlon
                          chipsets though.

I guess i'll give Matrox a call as i always
                          had exellent service with them!

                            Hi,

Yes those instructions should work with any drivers in the 6.x range and before 5.41.

Have you tried it? It should work fine.

Do i have to install a TurboGL
driver or is it included in 6.X now?

                              Thanx BTW
