Suppose that the next card is only twice as fast as my max......
I mostly play Quake 1. I would be a able to timedemo at nearly 500 fps. What would be the point?
At some point a limit is going to be reached in the importance of 3D speed just like it was reached in desk-top speed.
Then the qualities that are matrox's strong points: image & features, would become just the things that people will want.
    I use a TNT-2 at work and it's a POS.

Hum...just saw something that might be a clue...

      http://www.gamers.com/news/499791

"[id Software's John] Carmack has seen it. id is behind [XBA]." ...

UPDATE: id's Carmack contacted us to inform us he has never seen any Bitboys demo, and he does not endorse the chip maker:

"I have never had any contact with Bitboys. I have never seen chip specs or demos.
I did do a bit of work with the original unreleased TriTech chip many years ago, which had (I think) Bitboys heritage, but I don't know a thing about Glaze 3D."

JC says that he doesn't know anything avout the glaze 3d. That's true it's been cancelled. However maybe he saw the tech (XBA) on the new Matrox G800 and that would explain the small thing he mentionned in one of his .plan.

Heck it might not be it but...

Ok, I'll either accept the vague posts about the NDA, and hope I'm not waiting for something that will never come out. As I've said, I really dislike Nvidia, 3Dfx is as good as gone, and ATI has too long a history of bad drivers for me to trust them fully.

Now, where do I go to sign an NDA so I can at least get some info out of Matrox too? I've been going stir-crazy waiting for a better vid card, preferably one with better OpenGL support.

I've had it! I'm breaking my NDA right now! The G800 will be a simple dongle to remove the hidden powers in the G200/400/450 chipset. We at Matrox designed the Gx00 chipset to be effective for at least 100 years. But since no one would need to ever upgrade from a full power Gx00 board, we decided to cripple the performace and occasionaly release "new" faster chips.

Now I must run to an undisclosed country and hide from the hitmen my Matrox overlords are sure to send after my hide.

              Or not...

I agree with cjolley from a few posts back. I think that hardware is getting ahead of the games. I run all the games I play at 1280 x 1024 perfectly, and I've only got a pentium II 450 with a G400 MAX. I just want a card that will let any game run at 50 fps at that resolution and have excellent image quality. I'm not one to run 3d mark or quake benchtest every day just so I can brag about running games at 100 fps.
BTW, who came up with the idea that matrox's new card is going to be average in speed. Unless someones got real information, no-one can say that matrox is behind on their schedule or that the g800 is going to be slower than nvidia's next card. No-one knows. I hope the g800 is a kick @rse card that whips any other card in speed. Because they are way ahead of the comp in any other department. So I can say I told you so. Anyway, thats just my theory.

                  The_King,

I think vid cards have a long way to go. Peak framerates and average framerates are only of limited interest to me. Minimum framerates are what I care about the most. If I'm playing UT and the framerate drops to 15fps in a firefight - there's a good chance my player is going to die.

In addition, there is still alot of eye candy that game developers can add as cards get more powerfull. Developers are getting better at building in "scalability" to games, so that someone with a weak card can play, but someone with a fast card can turn up all the details.

Some of the tech demos out there show some really cool things, realistic reflections, shadows, detail textures that make sand look like sand and character movements that look like a real person and not a stick figure, etc...

When I saw the Radeon Ark demo, I could hardly believe my eyes on some of the things that they were doing.

                  -AJ

Trying to figuring out what Matrox is up to is like tying to find a road that's not on the map, at night, while wearing welders googles!

How do you like your Radeon? Do you use Win2K?
Since Matrox obviously won't be releasing anything worthwhile soon,I'm buying one this month, but don't know if I want to get the 64MB just for the faster memory. It's $70 more, has twice as much memory, and has the ViVo stuff too, but the faster memory is what I'm interested in.

How high can you overclock it and how does it compare to the Matrox in image quality?

I agree, there is more than 1st person shooters that we need a fast video card for. I honestly hate the majority of first person shooters, prefering action/strategy games. The G400 does a decent job, but I'd like to be able to run at 1600x1200 and play the other games out there at a reasonable speed. Also, I'd like to see GOOD OpenGL support, with no problems running ANY program I might want to run on a Gx00 card. That may be what's delaying things, the driver development.

Hey guys, I have a P3 850 O/C 1.13 GHz and a G400 32 MB O/C 175core/233mem (a MAX is 150core/200mem) and I must use the 800x600x32bits with everything maxed-out. If I use higher resolutions, the framerate drops below 25 fps. I feel my monitors quality is just wasted; Even though I reckon the G400 is the best image quality (2D/3D) I've seen, it's just not powerful enough anymore. I just REALLY hope the they annouce the G800/Condor 2/whatever at GDC in March, and that we can get the card in April MAX!

I'm pretty happy with my Radeon after a week of register tweaking all is working OK.
It's like a MAX with double the speed and 90~95% of the image quality (MAX is the 2d King).
I had a little shimmering effect with my Sony monitor but a register setting fix it.
I can say that i'm really impressed with the speed of the card when I play Sacrifice with all effects at maximum + (1024x768x32bit).
Since i bought it i have not o/c it yet but it can surpass the 64Mb's performance if you o/c it at 183/183 and more (it's 166/166 default) with ease.

I will use it until October when I will buy the G800 (I hope it’s out until then , and faster than my Radeon ).

Why do so many people say they don't care about speed, say that might buy NVIDIA, and say they want to G800 to be the fastest card around? Seems like a couple of contradictions in there...
