Just because its pin compatable doesn't mean that the bus width stays the same. Look at the FCPGA PIII's and Celeron II's. They are pin compatable - but one has SMP support and the other doesn't. They reserve pins in the socket for future use, and thus the extra pins are not used on the Celerons, but the PIII's use the pins for SMP support. (even though it has been theorized this change is internal to the processor casing, the SMP pins on the Cel II are labeled 'reserved')

It just means that you can drop a G800 into a G450 board and it will work. There are many ways that this can be accomplished - having the chip sense the presence of a signal on a 'reserved' pin and if its one way enable a wider memory bus, if not then use a standardl; having it auto sense the ram attached to it - if you used dual 64bit buses, then it would be able to see that nothing is attached to the second (also compliments of 'reserved' pins) and disable using it - there are countless ways it can happen.

Again, pin compatable means that you could drop a G800 into a G450 board and it would work - it doesn't mean that all of the features would be enabled and used.

While it would be more expensive to do, i think it would worth it if they put dual 64bit mem buses like the G400 - it would help performance and is definatly needed.

And, supposedly the X-Box was running off of nVidia NV25 performance level silicon.

Im still hoping my theory that the delay of the G450 has been partly due to waiting to get the G800 ready to come out at apporximatly the same time.... Hoping hoping....

And im hoping for a PCI G450.... mmmmmm Quad Head...

one thought I've been noodling with:

ATI had a problem getting the Fury Maxx to work under Win2K, eventually dropping any plans for a driver.

They claimed that there was a problem enumerating the graphics chips.

Does this pose a problem for all multichip cards? Does the V5 have plans for Win2K? Their site has no drivers, beta or otherwise.
          System: P4 2.4, 512k 533FSB, Giga-Byte GA-8PE667 Ultra, 1024MB Corsair XMS PC333, Maxtor D740x 60GB, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, PCPower&Cooling Silencer 400.

Capture Drives (for now): IBM 36LZX 9.1, Quantum Atlas 10KII 9.1 on Adaptec 29160

Good name for a video card, eh!

            T&L?
            Dual chips?
            hw dvd?

Buy a Matrox (con)Fusion coming soon to a store near you.
Everything I say is true apart from that which is not

I feel its about time that i break down and quote Ant:

              "I don't have a clue really I'm just guessing"

Until someone acctually sees a G800 it unlikely that any of this can be proven or disproven - and those who could can't.

Fusion reminds me of power plants that turn your screen green and make you grow extra thumbs or bombs that destroy the planet.
Doesn't sound very safe to use or stable.

                  Hi friends,

I just have heard that the Matrox Fusion cards will be a new generation of graphics cards with integrated/onboard SBLive sound-chips and one USB connector (for Gamepads) !

These cards only need a single interrupt and will be the first real multimedia cards !

                  Best Regards, Uwe.

PS: Certainly this is only a rumour, isn´t it ?

Fushion... another option... An add-on card that will replace the RR-G. As there's both a Fushion G450, and a Fushion Plus G800... Anyone thought of that option?

Besides, when you fuse things, they melt together to become one, thus the Fushion could well be an add-on. Isn't it stated somewhere that the RR-G will definately NOT work with a G450? Enter the Fushion G450...

What kind of add-on though? More (multiple) heads?

                    Jord.

Yea - I'd thought of that Jorden - with the Plus either meaning that's it's a fast Marvel or a Marvel with extras: MPEG4 anyone ?

Oh yes, really getting the speculations going now! Or should we trust Ant? Hmm - very likely!

                      Paul.

That Plus might be there to avoid having it confused with a Fushion for the G450

If you ask for a Fushion Plus, they know you have a G800

Anothing thing, is that no matter what the Fusion G450 and the Fusion Plus G800 are - no matter if the Fusion means a second chip, a T&L unit, the Marvel hardware, or something else - the G800 will most likely run it faster than the G450. Maybe thats all the Plus means?

I think you're all on the wrong track, I think Matrox has something much bigger up their sleeve, like an on chip nuclear fusion based power supply, none of this secondary external power supply business that 3dfx has going
Look, I know you think the world of me, that's understandable, you're only human, but it's not nice to call somebody "Vain"!

Fusion power supply would be awesome, the card would be self powered for umm 1000 years or more. There is always the small risk that the card could take out your computer along with the town and state you live in, but hey that's a small price to pay for awesome super fast delux 3D graphics
