Ok, the VFAT problem-- I don't know where it came from, but it didn't go away until I re-installed windows. Again.
So now I'm back at square 1. If the matrox drivers are installed, I get a BSD on startup of windows, and anytime a program is run. It's interesting that this doesn't happen the first couple of times that windows is run-- perhaps it has to do with the only game that gets installed on this machine -- Asheron's Call?
Oh, and yes, putting the number9 card in gets rid of the BSDs.
