It was on Meltdown 2000 about DirectX 8 ...

just do a search about matrix pallette skin on google or something, there are some very good tutorials about DX8 out there that give you an idea.

I can remember that Matrox even posted some powerpoit demo, showing off teh capabilities of that technique, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

Well from a personal point I have decided that the G400MAX in my system will be upgraded in April this year whatever is available on the market.
NV20 & Radeon II are supposed to be with us in late March bother offering truely amazing leaps & bounds in graphics technology.
If Matrox have a GXXX also available all the better, it gives me three chipsets to look at.
If they don't then I'll only have to check out the specs on two.
It cost one penny to cross, or one hundred gold pieces if you had a billygoat.

When you are about to register in the "In the Loop" Matrox newsletter, one of the possible choise is are you a "Gaming enthusiast" about new Matrox Hardware and for new game supported by the Matrox Graphic cards.

And so the cryptic messages continue
I think you have to set yourself a date and then try and stick by it.
When somebody wants to buy a PC they could wait for months.
Each month will offer a better spec for the same price.
However the end result is they don't actually have a PC while they are watching the prices drop.
I'm going to tell myself April for an upgrade.
18 months is quite long enough for the life of a video card!
I may leave it until May before the actual purchase, let supplies sort themselves out, drivers mature, prices drop etc.
But no later than May, i'm just starting to suffer on some of those more graphics enchanced programs.

Yeah, I'm going to set myself a deadline also. We've been hearing all of the 'wait a little longer' stuff for 6 months. I'm going to wait until June and then buy the best non-Nvidia card out there, which I'm guessing will be an ATI card.

Yeah, I love Matrox cards, but I'm not going to blindly sit around and pretend that their Gxxx is going to be available in volume by summer.

                      Ok, here's the deal.

Some people can't say boo, except to tell you that your wait will be worthwhile.

Some people can't even say that.

But if your G400 runs all your games, what is the harm in waiting?

Mine plays everything I want to play at acceptable framerates and with an excellent picture quality. Why would I want to upgrade when a couple more months of patience will get me exactly what I want?

I'm not being cryptic now, am I? Suffice it to say that there are things that people can't tell you about for legal reasons, but that your wait will be worthwhile. How's that?

I'm the least you could do
If only life were as easy as you
I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
                      I would still get screwed

Thats depends on how stupid the person is who is reading your statement.

Now then, I understand what you are saying perfectly Gurm, and indeed I intend to try and be as patient as possible. Nevertheless, sometime in April/May I am building a new system for myself. Note that I am NOT upgrading, I am going to build an entirely new system. Hopefully something along the idea of a dual Athlon 1.X ghz w/512MB RAM, etc.

So, here's the thing, I currently have amongst my spare parts, my old G200. When I build a new system, I would rather not stick my G200 back into my current system and move my G400 into my new system UNLESS, Matrox has at least announced something by that time. If nothing has even been announced then, well, patience is a virtue, and my reserves will be running critically low by that time.

I would dearly love to hold out for whatever Matrox's next card might be. And if all I were doing was upgrading my existing system I most certainly would, but as I'll be building a new system, it puts a different spin on things for me.

Thats not really here nor there though. This is 3-5 months in the future, which is plenty of time for something (anything) to happen, whoever it may be that does the doing... or something like that.

The real question is not, will the wait be worthwhile, but do we have the patience to make it through that wait?

I've gotta say that I don't consider my G400 MAX capable of running some of my games at an a acceptable level anymore. I have a 21" monitor and having to run some games at 800x600 with detail turned down looks a little disappointing. I too will wait until around April when I'll have a bit of spare cash and buy whatever appears to be the best solution for my gaming machine for the money I have available.

Why people should wait ? I think if people need to upgrade then they should go on. Nothing has been announced (so basically it still vaporware as far as I'm concerned), and judging by what happened with the g400, once it will be announced, we will see it a few months later.

Anyway if that card is THE card, well waitin a few months wouldn't be bad, it will cost less (M card cost mucho $$$), and if its so revolutionary, it will still be ahead of competition or at least equal to it.

Personnaly, like Ant, my g400max wasn't enough for the game I play if i wanted all bell and whistle on (which is the purpose of a vid card), so I moved on to something else.

*nod* I agree with Ant also. My MAX is overclocked to hell with a bunch of additional cooling and heatsinks on the card, so it is slammed up to the ceiling on what it can do. And it is just getting by for the games I'm playing with the details up. however, there are some new spanky looking things coming out soon that I'm afraid that my MAX won't be able to handle. So at that point, I'm going to upgrade.

Gurm and others, yes, I absolutely understand about the NDA and stuff.. I am under quite a few of them at work. So I don't blame any of you guys at all for not being able to say anything except 'hang in there'. What is dissapointing is that M won't even admit to having anything in development. Even the company I work for will release some specs on our next generation products that are in the works or in beta/final testing stage. What it comes down to is that I would be willing to wait a bit longer if I actually got some info from M as to when they are releasing their card or even a couple specs on the thing. Because if they are planning on a sumemr release, then they must have some working boards they are doing beta testing on. My guess is they will do 1 more pcb/board spin and then release. So I'm looking at 3 months down the road for a release if they do a respin now.

Thats just gong on what I know about my companies product cycle times and stuff for releasing new boards. Basically what I'm saying is that M _must_ have working boards that are or are close to final design (and drivers that work fairly well by now also) if they dream of releasing by June.

And if thats the case, M should open up their tight asses and let us know what the hell is going on before we all really lose faith.

Matrox has a booth registered at CeBit, which is at the end of March. Rumor is that Matrox will announce something there. The booth part is fact, the announcement part is rumor. The rumor that is it a rumor is a rumor of the rumor that someone said was a rumor.
