Yeah, the Kyro2 really looks interesting.

I have two concerns with it though.
    1) People have said the original Kyro had some serious driver issues with graphical defects, etc.

    2) It doesn't have T&L. Of course T&L is a 3dmark only feature right now, and it may stay that way since CPUs are getting lots faster, but it will be interesting to see what happens due to this missing feature.

I don't know if I'll consider NVidia. They sure have some fast, cheap stuff but the quality is just enough lower that I can notice it (although I may just be seeing this on lesser quality monitors.)

Personally I'm hoping for ATI to make something special in RadeonII. They need to get their Win2k drivers improved before I'll go near them though.

well heiney, the kyro is as fast as a gf2 in games like q3, which is fast enough for me, and since next year most gamers will want a dx8 card anyway they're going to sell their kyro2s nonetheless (and it won't hurt as much as selling an expensive gf2u)... no dx8 card is out or even announced at a reasonable price point and it's still some time till dx8 becomes a major factor for gaming i think, so you should be safe with a kyro2 until you can afford a radeon2 or gf3 (version 2.0 ) or even (*pray *pray) a matrox dx8 card...

and the drivers seem to be much more mature (which isn't all that surprising since the kyro2 is basically a kyro1 at a higher clock speed on a smaller process)

ps: wasn't this thread about matrox related cebit news?

The Kyro II isn't available to buy yet though right?

Also, Anandtech was supposed to report more about it including Win2K drivers. Considering that Win2K is all I use (you couldn't pay me to use Win9X/ME) that's what kept me with my G400 so long and away from the Radeon. I have to buy a card soon since I sold my G400 and because this Banshee that I had laying around is hurting my eyes. :-)

it will be introduced in april afaik, and the w2k drivers seem as fast and stable as the 9x ones...

so i think i'llbuy one when the time of buying a new pc arrives, because by then no other not-too-expensive card will offer comparable speed (i think)

I wish ATI could get their act together and get good Win2K drivers. I just read another article on the Kyro II at Sharky's and it looks like the Radeon does really well in 98, but sucks BIG TIME in Win2K. I was hoping for the Radeon since I have to work on the computer alot and wanted something with good 2D in addition to good 3D.

i heard something, (it might have been here) about how nvidia was saying that you couldn't do HT&L with tile rendering.

(who makes kryo 2?) anyway, the kryo2 guys said just wait. so maybe they will release a kryo2 with T&L at e3 or later in the summer.

                it's KYRO not KRYO

PowerVR (matrox m3d, sega dreamcast) - they've made tile based renderers for years now and have quite a bit of experience with them...

the kyro II's 3d is fast, and the 2d quality should be better than nvidia's - that's enough to make a 150$ board (street price should be lower) interesting

ah well, and they said their nextgen card would indeed contain ht&l...

What is Kyro II's 2D Quality like? This is very important if they hope to compete on general Workstation Use

they hope to compete in the value-oriented gamers market. (at least for now, until they have made themselves a name)

Maybe matrox should call them selves waitrox, you wait and wait and wait...

The kyro II will only be interesting if it has custom refresh rate settings in the drivers otherwise you'll run into the problem of some games running at 60hz, like ATI radeon. bleh!

sorry greebe, i didn't think the matter with the kyro would expand so rapidly... but when the questions come i think it's better to share your knowledge (or what you believe to be knowledge) than to say "this is the wrong forum"

well ok, i'll start a new thread in general hardware if anyone asks another kyro question in here, ok?

                            No Mike,
It's the Hype Forum... or at least thread

Maybe we should ask Ant for a Hype Forum as well

There's not exactly much to talk about if we stick to REAL Matrox Hardware.
