There is nothing funny about having to bite your tongue everytime someone starts spreading false rumors.

We aren't even allowed to confirm if there is an unannounced product, even if we know there is one.

    • hmm ok... but since you're a beta tester you must know much about graphics cards (more than i do, at least)...

so, i'm gonna buy myself a new gaming pc this summer, and it'll cost somewhere around 1000-1500$ (which is enough to get a decently fast system - damn expensive systems don't have that great a price/performace ratio)... would you say i should buy a kyro II, or should i just wait a little longer (for prices to drop, for instance)?

      • Depends on what your priorities are. I always say that you should upgrade if there is a real need for you to do so (ie--> runs too slow, won't work with new proggies, etc.). If you wait for something else to come along or wait for prices to drop, well you will wait forever because there are always new products and prices are always dropping. Having said that, I would personally wait. We will soon see new products from several mfrs, and we will see pretty darned fast hardware drop further in pricing (the GF2 GTS's will surely drop soon. Maybe even below the KyroII price point. I bet that the Mx line will go way low ball.). That's what's great about the computer industry, there is always something new to try.

        • People, the beta testers around here are beta testers for Technical Support, they test drivers prior to release as I understand it. Yes they are under NDAs but that doesn't mean they know it all. Do you honestly think Matrox is going to tell these guys all of their plans? It's no good having a go at them for what they have or haven't said.

Now all of the hype about Matrox and CeBIT has purely been started by rumours flying around the Net, there has never been any substance to it. I dopn't know anything, all I have said is wait out CeBIT and see what happens, if anything happens. It's no good getting angry and uptight, if Matrox still can't come out with a new product after 2 years then maybe you should be looking elsewhere. From my experience of Matrox they do things when they want and how they want whether that's right or wrong in our minds.

Right lets all now chill out and wait for the Kyro II to be released

          • thanx for the info, i'll probably ask again in three months, when i'll have the money to upgrade

and well... there's definately need to upgrade... i ain't lying when i say i'm still using the 1064w as my "gpu" and your graphics cards are probably clocked higher than my cpu

            • I'm not really mad at anyone besides myself.

I should have realized a long time ago that Matrox doesn't really care much about the gamer's market and I should have gotten a different card. I was under the impression that some people here had some sort of clue about what's going on at Matrox and what they are planning. I'm hardly a hardcore gamer. I play maybe 2-3 hours a week. But, I want a good experience and the G400 hardly provides this anymore. Maybe the Kyro II will be a good choice, but I'm waiting to see what their image quality and Win2K drivers are like. I probably would have went for a GF2 a while ago except I'm picky about image quality. ATI would definately have my business if they could make a good Win2K driver since they have good speed and good image quality.

If you had done even a minimal amount of reading the posts in the speculation threads, you would have seen numerous times that anybody who knows something is under NDA and not able to discuss anything about future products. You're right ... you only have yourself to blame. No need to get excited about any new HW until you see the product released, determine its pricing and availability, and review the driver quality. Matrox hasn't even announced or provided guidance for any new HW so no one has any right to be mad at them for failing to meet their commitments. Its o.k. to speculate and get jazzed about what could be but don't fool yourself into thinking that has much to do with reality. As always, if you've got to have something new today or in the next month, go out and buy what's available now. There's plenty of time to review future HW before you should purchase it and you're getting benefit out of your current purchase. Personally, I'm still satisfied with my Max ... for now.

we (the users) have every right in the world to blame matrox for not even announce or provide guidance for any new HW

                  • No we can't blame them for anything.

They're a private company and can do what they want.

If they don't want the gamer's market that's their choice. I know I won't buy or recommend (or even sell through my business) any more Matrox products since they've obviously abandoned that market. I won't be stupid enough to buy their future cards (which I doubt they will have since they seem satisfied with their other divisions).

Enough ranting I guess. I think it's time I leave this forum since I'm obviously upseting some of the people who claim to be in the know and since I don't have any Matrox products any more and don't plan on getting any in the future. Sorry for wasting any of your time.

                    • yes we can blame them for not delivering, and we can punish them with not buying their products anymore - but if they really want to leave the gamer's market i guess we can only punish them with err.. well... ummm.... ignoring them? no... let me think... complaining in forums about them not delivering?

                      • I don't see Matrox as targeting the gamer's market: Look at how they distribute their graphics cards. I think they've produced a business card with the G4xx series that crosses over into the gamer's market which gives them some additional revenue that they wouldn't normally receive. Any company, public or private, has to make business decisions about what markets to go after and look at their resources to decide what to invest in to meet ROI goals. It may make sense for Matrox to more directly target the gamer's market in the future but it apparently hasn't been a priority in the recent past. Some of you may feel frustrated that they aren't meeting your needs but your needs and the business goals of Matrox probably don't directly coincide.

                        • It's just kinda annoying that they've been targeting the business customer for so long then they start marketing toward the gamer with the G400 and state that they're going to compete in the gamers market. That's just a year ago, but it seems like they've totally abandoned the gamer's market now.

PS-Sorry for continuing to complain, but I can relate to some of these threads, so I'll continue to post in them yet remain civil.

                              • I was about to say that Ant had just articulated my exact thoughts on this matter when I saw what APV posted.. now it would look like I was appropriating that compliment too..

At any rate, it is amusing to see how worked up people get over a video card. This is the seventh page of yakking about it and what good does it do? I have been using my G400Max since I built my current system a year and a half ago (yes, still using the PIII 600 Katmai, thanks) This system is still as fast as it was when it was bleeding edge, and serves me well with whatever I seem to want to do. When I'm ready to build a new system, probably next year, It will probably be an absolute state of the art killer at the time (I'm thinking dual Sledgehammers and whatever video card I see as best serving my needs then.)

Since I built my system, I have built four other systems for people, all using Matrox cards (2 16MB G400s and 2 old Millennium IIs). For these systems I used a Pentium Pro, a Celeron, an Athlon 700 and a PIII 550. I never had a lick of trouble with the video cards in any of these systems. Installed and worked like a dream. The older cards were even supported with drivers on Matrox's website. I've used the 16 MB G400 for UT and it just walked all over a 32MB TNT2 Ultra a friend had in his computer. He has since upgraded his nVidia card twice, but I'm still happy with the Max I'm using. I can wait for whatever comes next.. it's no big deal.
