        My 2 cents worth.

My experience with nVidia cards is in Win2k rather than Xp but M$ being M$, they should be around the same.

So far i see that The nVidia drivers have been uninstalled/removed from Add/Remove Programs and from the Device Manager. That didn't remove nVidia from my system, I had booted into safe mode to do the above anyway. I had to go to Add/Remove HARDWARE and remove the nVidia cards manually ( they will show up as hardware with ! in front) even though they dont show up anywhere else and reinstalling windows doesnt work and i only found this out when my WinTV detected the nVidia card (3 yrs ago?) and wouldnt work with my G400 which has been in my rig since then.

IMHO, Matrox has the best OS/driver support (they were the first to support XP (and linux when it came out ages before anyone else); And G400 is one the best Monitor cards ever (wish i had the $$ for the G400Max). This is my opinion of course.

tried installing it with the win 9x drivers, and xp drivers
Does this mean that he's tried 2 different operating systems? I dunno.
In my experience it is often necessary to reinstall Windows after changing your display adapter. If your previous card is an ATI or nVidia card which come with huge driver packages it is more than possible that they have left some of their settings in the registry, and that causes problems.

It just that WinXP can be a driver HELL. You don't have the option ADD/REMOVE HARDWARE anymore they just renamed it to ADD HARDWARE. In win2K you could remove crappy hardware drivers (don't forget to check show hidden devices) within a second.
            Main: Dual Xeon LV2.4Ghz@3.1Ghz | 3X21" | NVidia 6800 | 2Gb DDR | SCSI
            Second: Dual PIII 1GHz | 21" Monitor | G200MMS + Quadro 2 Pro | 512MB ECC SDRAM | SCSI
            Third: Apple G4 450Mhz | 21" Monitor | Radeon 8500 | 1,5Gb SDRAM | SCSI

That's because drivers are supposed to be available for uninstall through add/remove programs. Don't forget about device manager....

I am currently running on this same ECS motherboard (no LAN). I'm experiencing no problems in Win2k. I don't have the latest mobo bios either. Haven't gotten around to updating it yet.

I'm with Rags on this one. I would remove ALL the video drivers on the system, including the G400 drivers, and start from scratch with the latest G400 XP drivers.

Right Rags but that won't always work.

I would be tempted to have a look at the power supply. However first does the computer work with a clean install with all other items removed or disabled in the bios. Clear and reset your cmos after removing the cards and then disable the onboard hardware.
Also if you're running with acpi enabled it's also worth loosing that to see whether thats the problem or not.

Correct, and win2k's device manager didn't always work either. Some drivers install apps that aren't kept track of by the OS, it has no way of knowing about them.

An uninstaller for the drivers is the only way to get around this, and as such XP drivers are SUPPOSED to have uninstallers for upgraded drivers, and that uninstaller is supposed to work and it's supposed to be available from the add/remove programs function.

SHIT. i even uninstalled, then re-installed windows! NO LUCK!!!
it works fine and all, and in final relaity benchmarks, it does the bus speed transfer rate test, and the 2d tests, but freezes in 3 seconds in the 3d test. i REALLY wanted the 3d! because it is SOO much better looking that other cards!
