        • LOL......If I told the Litho and Etch Engineers I wanted to target the Poly Final CD's at 0.05 they would throw my Arse out of the 4th floor windows

Now, there are all kinds of tricks to get the ACLe (Electrical Channel Length ) down to 0.05 or smaller. But there is no manufacturable process to make the actual Poly lines that small yet..... maybe in 5 years

Nappe, Do you still think Parhelia will use embedded ram?

                      MDHome:

well, if I haven't made myself enough clear, I'll say this once more:

since I first time heard about parhelia project, there was two major rumours floating around. one was use of eDRAM / eRAM (it could have been possible too.) and another was using wider memory bus.

since January I have been almost sure that we will see 256Bit wide memory bus and release of 4xG450 MMS made it look like very obious.

Of course this has good and bad sides: One of the bad sides is price. Afaik, eDRAM might have been cheaper. But then eDRAM gives even more bandwidth to inside chip memory, but not so much on board memory. So it needs very powerful memory management unit. wider memory bus gives that almost 20GB/s bandwidth to whole memory, but it is very difficult to get efficient enough. that's why I am willing to see if Parhelia will have that 4 channel architechture. (64 bits per channel) which I mentioned here earlier. (can be also found from Beyond3D boards.)

if all those little hints what I have heard are true, we will see something that Bitboys have been talking all the time but haven't got it yet to working silicon. (and no I don't mean eDRAM, but things that and insane memory bandwidth generally speaking can deliver.)

Matrox has something really special in their sleeves, but hopefully they are willing to show it soon. because no other competitor is standing still right now, so be prepared.

This is going to be great year to consumers.

                      • Well if they do go for 4 x 64 bit,get ready to pay through the nose for it....but on the other hand,it should be quite impressive, performance wise....

If i'm not mistaken,Greebe already hinted that it won't use Edram...

                          • Here's my take...

                            X-Box vrs PC graphics.....

Don't forget you are looking at antialiased graphics pushed to a TV. This is going to make the graphics "feel" better than they realy are. Try running your pc games at 800x600 4xAA that's probaly >= the res that the x-box is putting out.

UMA / video memory vrs system memory

Most video card memory is not a huge jump in speed over system memory. You speed increased are comeing from not having to share bandwith to it. The SGI UMA boxes were designed to share the memory that's why they works so well for video (ie movies). PC's do not share well, all the connecting busses are too narrow (norhbrige etc).

                            eDRAM

I realy only see this as benifiting things like AA / dualhead / overlay. It's just too expensive to use for anything other than frame buffer tricks. The plus side of edram is it should give enough bandwith to get AA for free ( asuming you have a deicated AA unit and not one shared with something else ie SiS315). It should also allow almost unlimited sized overlays on either display of a dual head card.

                              • My wait is paying off...

Okay well I just have one question, and it's about AA.

Is the card going to do the traditional implementation of AA, where the image looks bad & then the card does some work to spruce it up, or are we going to see the wonders of Matrox render an image that DOESN'T NEED AA? Because that would be cool.

Oh okay so I lied. Not only one question.. sue me.

Since (presumably) it's all dead & gone, can anyone now tell us what "Fusion" was all about? Or is that still top-secret?
