  • What does the Parhelia 512 look like ?

We all have seen the pictures of the alpha-board (with the large heatsink), but are there any pictures of the production board ?

How is a TV connected to it ? Using a dongle on the DVI ?

(just curious for the heatsink, ...)

Dongles... no pics of a production version are available yet... possible very Soon™ tho

Would that mean that you'd have to change cable-connections just to switch from e.g. 3 monitors to some setup with a TV-out ?

        Ever hear of a switchbox?

            Ok...

Seems like everyone wants the benchmarks but in my case, all I want to know is...

...will it come with a fan?

I'd really hope that it doesn't as it would add unnecessary noise in my already quiet system.

            Cheers!

Haig says yes. This is logical, because the transistor count is high and the card is based on an 0.15 um manufacturing process. They will probably move into a smaller process later (next year or so)... At that time the lower clocked versions could have a chance of operating without a cooling fan.

                Awwww...

Shucks! You've got a good point there, my friend. Can't they use a Zalman flower-type heatsink instead?

i was wondering the same thing with the zalman myself, i was thinking about attatchnig 2 zalmans to a copper base and placing the copper base on the chip itself and then having a very quiet voltage controlled fan blowing air over them which would be near enough silent after you put the case on, wonder if its possible with already available cardslike geforce 4 or radeon 8500?
                  anybody tried something similar?
is a flower best picked in it's prime or greater withered away by time?

                    HSF

The HT folks had already started talking about dumping the fan and lowering the clock frequency and/or water cooling to quiet the card.

                        Dr. Mordid:

Yes, but ever heard of a high quality switchbox ? Which make me wonder... Does image quality degrades enormously when switching dvi-signals (as opposed to vga) ?

Also, it is still unclear what this switchbox ought to switch: is it sufficiant to have a 1 dvi -> 2 dvi box (1 for dvi/vga to monitor, the other for tv) ?

Switching digital signals should have absolutely no effect on image quality.

Switching analog will have an effect regardless.

I suppose that AGP cards were oriented this way to be like PCI cards. As for PCI cards... I remember that some older motherboards had a "PCI/ISA" slot. There was a PCI connector just next to a ISA connector. Because ISA cards are "upside-up", those two connectors shared the same bracket. You had to choose between an ISA or a PCI card.

                            Maybe that's the only reason.

I remember that I heard a few years ago about a project to rearrange ATX boards to have the AGP card the other way round, so that a simple heatsink on the GPU would benefit from the CPU's fan.
