          Regarding focused ion beam.

IIRC when they tape out core and fab it, they can make minute corrections with beam, which means they can save time when doing repairs as they don't need anoter tapout and fabbing to correct and test problems.

          Intel does this.

[Parhelia specs for 3rd pary developers]
Sorry, I had to delete my entry, because the whole case was more complicated than I thought.

SciTech and Matrox still talk about the specs for the Parhelia.

                Man,

I was kind of flinching when I was coming to check back on this thread, but y'all were quite nice about it!

And the fact that a Matrox employee has the balls to come here and say something about it gives hope for it!

In regards to their ability to compete with everyone else.

I think Anandtech illustrated it perfectly when they said "nVidia and ATI are not the giants they once were"

ATI has structured itself to be in the position of a FAST product cycle company. They are trying to technologically obsolete their previous products by the time they reach their 3rd cycle, ala Radeon 8500. nVidia kills the products in their 4th...as opposed to killing their 2nd when they rose to the top.

Matrox seems to kill products in say...their 10th cycle. While the value is good, the capital they lose to competition (and talent) seems to put such a strain on the company that it's all they can afford.

Now they USE to be a tiger. Back when the G200 came out it was a monster...the very release of the product put a huge strain on ATI and nVidia, but 3dfx ignored it. It was Matrox who told the entire market how to follow suite to image quality standards. I believe it was the G400 that gave nVidia a wake up call in IQ. nVidia took a look at the G400 and said "SHIT, we did this all WRONG"

ATI follows suite to nVidia for the next few years and then ATI eventually hires some of nVidia's core talent, and then one product cycle later ATI has the number one dog. Matrox's core talent got hired off years ago to the likes of too either nVidia or ATI (from what I have read though, mostly ATI it seems)

To turn Matrox into a company that just competes, would take an extreme capital investment that I don't believe they see as "worth it" right now.

I wish they did, but after the posts I kind of understand. Right now worldwide economy is in the toilet, and to make any kind of volume sales you have to be number one or else you're just losing money.

Yes, but when the tides of economy changes, it would be good if some company invested in or bought the graphics portion of M and took advantage of the brand name to produce something that's really good at everything for a change.

ATI is planning on a one-year cycle 'soon'. I don't think it'll be this year though.

Sounds like they kinda liked 3rd place a few years back?

                      Don't like the pressure?

                      Hmmm, sounds odd.

Parhelia was doomed when it started with the many problems...
in comparison with todays video cards...the parhelia is outdated, both in speed and quality...

look what I found in the maximumpc.com website....

The Matrox Parhelia? [60877 votes total]

                        Thumbs down (52672) 87%

                        goes to show..........

I think the real thing the Parhelia is outdated in is price.

Actually you guys are missing a big thing, the Parhelia was priced as a professional card. As it stands it's certified for quite a few professional apps, and to get a card that is certified for those, generally can cost you twice if not three times the price of the Parhelia. So all in all, for Professional 3D workers, it's quite the great card. Now if only they could get a killer Linux driver for it, then I'm sure Matrox could very well try to make a deal with ILM or Pixar or any of the other big names in the Video Grafx Industry. I've seen the Making of Episodes 1 and 2 of star wars and almost all of the ILM programmers have at least 2 monitors. And they have switched mostly over to linux. So hurry up Matrox!

                              Great post and very informative.

With all do respect, I believe the card does have some redeming qualities, and I for one am happy with my purchase.

whups some @$$ on just about everything on the market currently. Take a nice Trinitron up to about 1600x1200x32@75Hz on anything but a Parhelia...and it's not as good.

Parhelia aside from triplehead has made it worth my time to just run at 1600x1200 all the time. The glyph AA at high res fonts makes it look allll too sweet.

Actually I am in posession of a preproduction engineering sample beta board. That my very saying that may sick lawyers on me, I obviously don't care

I would love to post some pics if anyone asks.
