  • next Matrox card?

    Hi folks,

    I often heard that Matrox will release a new product next year, perhaps in a few months (not only rumors, also some comments of Matrox employees).
    (Perhaps this was already discussed, in this case: Sorry )
    What do you insiders think will this card be? A new Parhelia? A new Millennium card? A video-editing card?
    Can we really hope for something faster than the P?
    The original parhelia is their only product for which a update makes sense I think...
    I also think it's time for wild theories .

            Actually if you think about it.... that would be cool! Since Matrox generally has some pretty good driver development (although it takes 'em forever to release them). And on the other hand, technically if they used ATI chips, you could just use ATI's driver as well...

            Matrox won't do that though. Have they ever (besides the much maligned M3D) used a different manufacturer's chip?

                Matrox used to have good driver support, In a sense I think they have cut off the hand that feeds themselves..(their own)

                  Yeah, really Leech, how can you say that they have good driver development? Aren't you one of the most outspoken regarding the half-baked Linux drivers?

                      Don't know anything about the Matrox linux drivers, but their win drivers are definitly much better than ATIs...

                      Come on guys , we know Matrox will release a new card in the next half year, thanx to the tech support forum. Further, they released many new products the last time, for Matrox conditions, I think . Some of you must have an idea what it will be, a Parhelia 2, a Millenium P800, a G550 MMS? What?

                      Jokes are good, but thanx for every serious reply

                        You're joking, right?
                        ATI releases stable WHQL drivers more or less monthly and has an active user-based and in-house beta testing program. Since the early Catalysts, I have had almost zero problems with their drivers on either my 8500 or 9800.
                        Matrox on the other hand, releases about 2-4 updates per year and has canned its user-based beta program. Not to mention, they build Powerdesk around the bloated .NET platform.

                        Don't get me wrong, I have been a fan of Matrox for a long time, but facts are facts.

                        As far as Matrox's next card is concerned, I'm betting that it will be something like the P650, only slower, and with all of its 3d capabilities either stripped out or severely crippled (cost = $150). Maybe if we are lucky, we will get a die shrink of the Parhelia-512, with some minor improvements, but I am not holding my breath.

                          @Tomasz: I had a RF Maxx, nice card but worst support ever (2 driver releases, both terrible, no 2000 or xp driver ever) and that for a 600 DM card!!! Matrox offers XP drivers for older cards.
                          Further two of my friends still use R8500 on i850 boards and one a Radeon 64 DDR Vivo on a Via board, stability and compatibility with games is very bad since they had bought them (for example, its always goes like this: new driver release, problems with generals solved, new problems with avp2 occur, and so on).
                          Just look into other hardware/gaming online forums and count the ati/catalyst problem threads.

                          And why do you need more than about 6 (not 2-4 ) driver updates a year, I don't have any probs, performance is also good. Just think why ATI has to release a new driver each month.

                          fanATIc = terrible drivers
                          nVidiot = benchmark cheaters
                          XGI = now, we will see

                          I will buy any sucessor of the P immediately.

                          BUT THAT'S NOT THE SUBJECT OF THIS THREAD, please don't raise another one of these best-hardware quarrels, we're all just murcers .

                          PS: A die shriked P would be fine (the old Pitou story ), but do you really think they will release a card exactly matching abbilities of the low clocked and passive cooled P650 which is slower? Doesn't makes any sense I think.

                            BTW, your listing of fanATIc, nVidiot reminded me of something. I came up with a name for current Matrox users a while ago.

                            MatroxyMORONS

                            I include myself in that, but still...
