  • Quake II and G200 OpenGL

    Hello,

I'm in need of some help to get Quake II to work in OpenGL mode with my G200 and PD 5.13.

When I try and change Quake II to Default Open GL mode it comes back and tells me there is no hardware acceleration and it goes back to the console.

I have an 8MB SGRAM Millenium G200 AGP.
    I'm running Win98 at 1280x1024@24Bit Colour Depth.

I've also tried dropping the resolution down to 640x480 and trying it but no luck.

The strange thing is thhat I have had it working before I had to rebuild my system. Is there and order that you have to load the software in?

i.e PD drivers then DX6 and then Quake II?

Please e-mail me with any help as I do not check these forums that often.

    Thanks & Regards
    Grant

You are running the desktop at 24 bpp and quake 2 uses the desktop color depth. G400 doesn´t do hardware aceleration in 24 bpp. Try 16 bpp or 32 bpp, and quake will work.

Thanks, I've set the desktop to 16bit and it works fine now. the frame rate is not great at 16fps in 1024x768 mode on a PIII 450.

I'll have to treat myself to a G400 MAX soon.

I´m seeing I wrote G400, I mean´t G200... but that 24 bpp issue is the same inboth cards, glad you made it work.

You must realize G200 is almost 1 year and a half old and it has no multitexturing abilities. So you really can´t expect stellar performance in Q2, much less at 1024x768...

Hey, get the G400 and you won´t regret. 60 fps at 1024x768x16 trilinear filtering in my G400 at max speeds with a celeron 450, what do you think?

I just upgraded to a G400 from a G200 but even with the older card I got better FPS than 16 in Q2. Like 28-32 and I only have a celeronA337. Might be ya wanna check on some other things.

              My config is Abit BX6 R2, PIII 450, 128MB PC100 SDRAM, IBM 9.1GB 7200rpm HD, Adaptec 2940au SCSI, DEC RZ28, Quantum Fireball 4.3GB ST, Plextor Ultraplex 32 CD, Matshita CW-7502B CD-R.

I have my games installed on a partition on the DEC drive. Maybe I would get better frame rates by putting the games onto my IBM drive.

16 fps 1024x768 with the G200 (at default clock speed) is not bad, especially if Q2 is not tweaked for speed.

I got something like 22 fps at 1024x768x16 with G200 oc to 100/133, so...

                  hey!

30fps in 640x480 is perfectly fine for me on my g200/c300a

I get 40fps with Quake II in 640x480 mode.
Quake I give me around 52fps at the same resolution.

I'm running with no tweaks in Q2 and no overclocking of my G200 or PIII 450.
