  • What is your Favorite Classic Computer Game?

I don't know if anyone has done this before, although I am pretty sure it has, I would like to know what everyone's favorite classic computer games are. Give me the name and why you like it so much. I'll start:

    Star Control 2

This game was absolutely HILARIOUS!!! Great comedy, fun to play, awesome story and just the wackiest game technology. It even had a killer sound track and good graphics (for the time). To this day I have not met anyone who has played this game and hated it.

Civilisation 1, on the amiga. I played that for weeks (and I didn't even own an amiga, I almost moved in on a friend!).

I don't have to explain why I like civiisation, do I?

        M.U.L.E
        Elite (of course)
        Ultima III
        Any Infocom Text Adventure

This list could get quite long so I'll stop here.

Ah! the good old days. Playing 3D Monster Maze on my ZX81 with its (16K) RAM pack. And you had to jam a folded up beer mat under it or it crashed. We didn't get driver conflicts in those days, just incorrect beer mat positioning .

Hey, did anyone ever have that program which made your Commadore 64 floppy drive play a tune? And did you ever dare run it?

          Here's a few..

          Raid over Moscow
          Rambo
          Green berrets
          Beach Head
          Commando

All were Commodore 64 and Sinclair games

For me, it *has* to be the "Alternate Reality" series. This was a game that came out originally on the Atari 800, as well as a few others (like the IBM PC, but that version kinda sucked).

It came out in the early 80's and featured one of the first 3d engines (although you could only look and walk in four directions), and was the first game to feature texture mapped walls! It was also one of the first games to feature a complex story line, and one of the first to feature extensive opening credits, much like a television series.

The game itself was a first-person, real-time (but turn-based in combat, unless you were too slow - then you would "lose your turn")RPG game.

I still play it on my Atari 800 emulator.

What about Spy vs Spy? Or Kick Start? both on the Atari 800XL/130XE. What a machine.

Sorry, turbo, but Crystal Caves was pathetic when compared to Duke Nukem, or Commander Keen.

                            #1 - Ultima V

I got this the week it came out and is by far the most painstaking RPG i've ever played... this game took me a year to beat (playing about 3 hours average a day). I don't think I'd even beaten it without resorting to cheating at the end, heh. (I despise cheating and using hints)

                            #2 - Star Control 2

Pretty damn hard your first few times through. Not enough time to explore everything, damnit!

                            #3 - King's Quest 3

Oh man, figuring out those spells was a bitch. Turning that slut of a wizard into a cat was more satisfying than watching Pamela Anderson Lee pretend she has acting skills in that lame ass of a movie Barb Wire.

Pfft. You kids dont know nothing

#1 game of all time IMHO: Project Firestart on the C64. System Shock came close to recapturing the feel of the game, but just missed it.

                              #2: Maniac Mansion for C64

#3: This is a tossup for me between Time Pilot and Gyruss, both in the arcades.
