In the latest version of the demo, they've removed the advanced options menu; the way to access it is to pull down the command line and type a command. I think it's "preferences" or something like that. I just woke up so my brain isn't functioning.

    CMB:
I'm not sure if your BIOS has a weird setting holding you back or not. I'm no expert on BIOS settings, but the ones I do know will affect performance are "video cache mode" or something similar, which should be set to USWC, and there's also a setting where you can choose AGP/PCI or PCI/AGP. Obviously it should be set to AGP/PCI. My graphics aperature size on mine is set to 128megs (I have 128megs of RAM). You could list em if you want and I'll see if anything looks outta whack, but like I said, I'm no expert.

      hi, thnaks again for helping
      whats USWC???
ill have to have a look and change stuff

i also get this type of problem in Wheel of time and Need for speed road challenge/high stakes or whatever they call it.

everything just goes to whack when its in 32bit even the cursor judders on the menu screen... oh well im off to route in the bios :O)

        nope,
i can either have disabled or enabled
        for system bios
        video caching
        or video shadowing

nothing else there, i set my agp aperture to 128 instead of 64 but makes no difference.

i remember reading before that having DX6.1 on makes a differnce..... hmmmm
        worth a try i suppose i guess im a re-install overdue...
but it should work damn it AGGGGGHHHHH

well i 'ghosted' my sytem and put a fresh windows on last night.
Unreal wont even recognise my card in D3D with Dx6 allthough performance is consistantly poop throughout all res's and settings.

Perhaps what we have here is a case of inefficent texture management as was said earlier. In Qtest 1.08 i couldnt even think about playing in 32-bit in 1024x768
          now i have no problem........

All i can say is that i hope it has been resolved in the retail version.

even you guys that are getting decent performance have 32mg

anyone out there having flying performance on a 16mg ?????????

if it is a texture management problem.... shouldnt lowering the res fix stuff???
          (not technically minded) :O)

maybe the next driver release or the fabled re-written for DX-7 ones will totally sort this problem out.

(anyone know if the next driver release and the re-written, is one in the same?)

Hey take a look at this from the Wheel of time post.. might explain our problem...

The problem might be that current drivers don't support texturing from AGP-addressable memory, so the textures have to be transferred first to the cards local memory before using them, slowing frame rates down in scenes with lots of big textures.

That's only a workaround for the problem. G400 does have enough power to do some serious eye candy if the drivers have the necessary features.
Why the volumetric lighting slows frame rate? It's because the lighting fixtures are applied to the textures and if the textures are big, it will take some time to transfer them to the cards memory for display. And if the textures are updated very often with new light fixtures, it will slow everything down. Using big textures with light fixtures directly from main memory would be much faster but the current drivers don't support it. The slowdown is even more with G200's, because of its small local video memory bandwidth.

If thats the case, it could explain why everything runs great for me (as it should)
in 16-bit since theres a few of us with this problem do you think its worth getting haig to listen and see what he says????
might be able to determine whether its our drivers or our systems.....

              -also- just remembered
in this idiots original review of the Marvel
he said performance dropped serverly in 32-bit mode that would back up the lack of memory theory...

but if all this holds true...
how come icanplay Slave zero demo, with everything on (bump mapping looks great)
in 1024x768 and all is well??????

              AGGHGHHHHHH drving me nuts...

                CMB:

Maybe having a G400 16meg really makes a difference in 32bit color. Weird man. I know that I have ZERO problems like that on my 32meg G400. I wonder if Haig could shed some light on this for you. Too bad your having all these problems cause U.T. ROCKS!! I'm LOVING it. Domination is more addictive than crack. When I buy the full version, I'll see if the performance is any different from the demo.

                  Two points :
                  1) Running at high resolution, 32 bit with 16Mb is probably not a good idea.
                  2) UT requires DX7 !!!

Just some observations I made about UT.

I am running a cel400 with 64 meg ram and 32 meg G400. When I startup UT (original version) I get fair bit of HD accessing as it loads up the textures. Once I move through the level a bit, the HD accessing stops and the game runs just fine. If I recall correctly, I get about 40+ fps (average, the lowest fps gives wierd values such as 1, due to the initial HD accessing) at 1024x32bit, detailed textures, world and character detail medium, and HUD off. Not sure about filtering or z-buffer depth.

Now running UT in glide on a cel400, 64 meg ram, and 16 meg V3 2000, the level loads up quicker, but it continued to access the HD. This was very brief but gave a noticable jerk, and continues as you play. The average fps was higher than on the G400, but play not as smooth.

Now large amounts of system ram would eliminate the HD accessing, but a card with only 16 megs of ram would still be accessing texture from system memory. I would expect much better performance with a G400 32 meg vs a 16 meg card. Is there anyone with 32 meg cards and seriously slow gameplay?

ive just read a post in my new thread from a Marvel other who runs UT no prob in 32bit colour, so maybe its my motherboard, only thing i can think off?
The Rock, What motherboard do you have, or would reccomend?

I just the game last night..CompUsa @30.00 today only.
It is real cool...big install 600+ megs (my Unreal folder was 800) add new maps and this sucker will be 1 GIG ! The Game is Big.
When you install choose "Other" then choose d3d forget Open GL. It worked right out of the blocks for me. I am still dizzy

                        I run it 800x 600 32 bit
                        World tex detail on
                        Skin high
                        Dynamic lighting on
                        show decals on

It runs fine but if you want to compete on line with a Modem you need 640x4 16 bit low detail ect. thats what I rec.

                        I have my G400:
                        Anistropic Filter on
                        Palettized tex on
                        Tripple Buffer on
                        Sup pixel on
                        Device bit cache on

                        MGA Tweak
                        Gclk 159
                        Memory 199
                        Warp 159

Many more tweaks to follow this is only the beginning....

I will only use Asus boards; mine's a P2B. After reading some other threads, it appears the 16meg card is your limitation though. I'd hate to see you waste $$$ on a new mobo and have the same problem. Too bad you couldn't get a lend of a 32meg G400 to slap in there and get your question answered for sure.
